Honey and Lemon Cough Syrup with Coconut Oil

This week my three year old daughter was sick with a bad cold. Poor little thing, this is the first bad cough she has had. I always have a hard time when my babies are sick. I do my best to care for them. I’ve spent a good part of this week snuggling her and feeding her nourishing food.

My daughter, Naomi, didn’t sleep well the other night due to her sore throat and cough. Being the “natural mama” I am, I decided to make her a cough syrup rather than purchasing medicine.

I did some research and this is what I learned…

21 Day Healthy Habit Challenge

I’ve read that it takes 21 days to effectively form a new habit.

This means in order to make real changes to your life you have to diligently enforce your goals daily for 21 days before they will stick.

How hard can it be?

Well, if you’ve been meaning to make healthy changes to your life, (think back to those new years resolutions you made in January) but really haven’t made any progress, today is the day to start!

TODAY???

YEP!

Not tomorrow, or Monday or whatever day. Today is the day to start!

How many times have you told yourself that you would start changing this habit or that habit next week, or on the 1st of the month or on Monday? I have done this MANY times!  I can tell you that when “Monday” came around I had an excuses and decide to start the next day or the day after that and ended up not making any changes.

Change doesn’t come easy. It takes a lot of work and determination.

So today I thought I’d start a 21 Day Healthy Habit Challenge. Today I’m making changes in my life! They may not be life altering changes, but they are things that I’ve been wanting to change about myself for a long time.

My Healthy Habit Goals

  • Spend time outdoors
  • Walk/Workout
  • Eat 6-9 cups of vegetables

1) Spend time outdoors – I am a hermit by nature. I could spend everyday locked in my room if I wanted to. I need to make myself go out and enjoy the fresh air. Sunlight and fresh air are  very important to our health.  I may only go out 10-15 minutes a day right now, (it’s very cold and we have a lot of snow) but it’s better than not going out at all.

2) Walk/Workout – I really shouldn’t start a strenuous workout plan right now, (just had a baby) but I want to form the habit of working out daily. Even if it’s just a 30 minute walk. Staying physically active is not only good for physical health, but mental and emotional health too! I always feel happier and mentally clear when I workout everyday.

3) Eat 6-9 Cups of Vegetables & Fruits – I recently watched this video that has inspired me to want to eat more vegetables and fruit everyday.
I eat similar to the diet she recommends in this video, except for the amount of vegetables and fruit. She recommends eating 3 cups of green leafy vegetables, 3 cups of sulfur rich vegetables and 3 cups of colorful vegetables and fruits. My goal is to aim for 6-9 cups of vegetables and fruits a day.

Those are my goals!

Today I’ve eaten a lot of veggies and plan to take the kids for a little walk outside this afternoon.  This may not be too hard after all!

I will be posting weekly updates on how I’m doing with this challenge. One day down, twenty more to go!

So how about you? Would you like to spend the next 20 days forming healthy habits? Join me and start today! What kind of healthy habits do you want to start implementing into your daily life?
