How To Make Coconut Butter (Video) from The Coconut Mama

Have you ever made coconut butter? It is so easy to make! I’ve been making it for years. We love coconut butter in my home. It was one of my daughters first foods when she was a baby. We use it to make coconut milk and desserts.

I know I learn best when I can watch, so I thought I’d share these videos with you.  So here are three videos my three-year old daughter and I filmed this morning.

You can find organic shredded coconut here!

I enjoy learning about your recipes, but please be careful with your beautiful daughter. Out scares me to watch her put her fingers in that food processor.

So, I tried this last night. I had sweetened coconut flakes. Not as fine as yours. It didn’t work :(. I have a ninja food processor. It has four settings. I used it on crush which is a higher speed setting. My machine got so hot I couldn’t touch it. Do you have any tips for me? In the end mine looked kind of like yours in the beginning of the video, just softer.

Do you have any video of that? I’d love to
    find out some additional information.

So how do you store the butter? I tried making it but it is too hard to spread and if I refrigerate the mixture is really too hard to use plus not creamy at all. did I do something wrong? I used my braun food processor and did it for 20 minutes. I think your written recipe called for 15-20 minutes but it never seemed to be creamy just liquified on me so I poured it in a jar and but in the fridge.

I have the same problem and I don’t want to keep it out in room temperature, as i’m afraid it will get rancid, any ideas. I love it though.
About how much dried coconut do you need to make 1/2 cup of butter, as i saw in a recipe?

I am a fairly new convert to Coconut Oil, etc. I am thrilled to have found Coconut Mama and truly appreciate all the tips, recipes and helps. Thanks for publishing this blog. I love the recipe for Coconut butter and the new one for Chocolate Coconut butter bars. They look delicious.

I wish I had a blender that would do that. My old cheap blender did not work for making coconut butter.

Soo, I just received my food processor and jumped to the kitchen to make this. 🙂
Is it supposed to be completely creamy? i just made it and added a bit of water as it was not going so well, but it is not thoroughly smooth, you can still feel some grains. It is not like store-bought peanut butter, it’s more of a lumpy texture… And a dessert I made with it is on the fridge right now. So, great… However, yours does not look sooo smooth, does it? I was expecting to be like the nut butters, but maybe it is just not?…
Oh and also, do you just eat it like that? I am not a big fan of coconut, but it doesn’t seem such a pleasant snack, fo it is not sweet at all (would you add any sugar?) and is has some lumps…
By the way, the kid is sooo sweet! Maybe that how you balance the unsweetened coconut butter? (Sorry, lame joke!)
    Thanks! 😀

how do you make coconut milk from this?

  • marie May 10, 2013, 3:30 pm

Every time her fingers go in the food processor with it plugged in, I GASPED. I’m thankful for the video content, but just a reminder- all it takes is for her to suddenly lean on the machine buttones with her other hand and her fingers will be gone.

Marie – The food processor has a safety. It will ONLY turn on if the lid and CAP are on and locked. There was no possible way my daughters fingers could have been chopped off.

Can you use it as a substitute for anything that takes “butter”?  Baking, etc?  Do you use unsweetened coconut?  I love your site!  Thanks in advance:)

    • Tiffany @ The Coconut Mama May 10, 2013, 3:56 pm

No. This is more like a nut butter. Coconut oil and butter can often be substituted for each other though.

  • Prettyfawn March 3, 2013, 7:25 am

So please tell if the only ingredient you have in the recipe was coconut flakes? Is that all you do is blend it in a food processor for 12 minutes?

  • Carole December 21, 2012, 2:52 pm

Do you have this in written form? I learn better that way. Thanks!

    • Tiffany @ The Coconut Mama December 21, 2012, 3:40 pm

Yes, I do have it linked above :). Here it is

Question:  what is the difference between coconut BUTTER and coconut CREAM?

    • Marie A February 21, 2013, 3:14 pm

I have the same question – Is there a difference between coconut butter and coconut cream and coconut cream concentrate? I have shredded coconut so I could make coconut butter, but I also have a can of organic coconut cream.

Thank you for your site Coconut Mama!

      • The Coconut Mama February 22, 2013, 4:39 pm

They are all basically the same and can be used in place of each other.

    • Tiffany @ The Coconut Mama May 10, 2013, 3:58 pm

Coconut butter, coconut mana and coconut cream concentrate are all the same thing. I have seen canned coconut cream that is not the same as coconut butter. It was just the thick cream skimmed off of coconut milk.

Your daughter is too cute!!!!!  Thanks for sharing!  How do you make coconut milk from coconut butter though?

  • Diane December 15, 2012, 7:33 am

omg, your little is ADORABLE!!  Thanks for the video 🙂

  • Psalm18v2 December 14, 2012, 8:44 pm

Could I use raw coconut to make coconut butter?

    • Tiffany @ The Coconut Mama December 15, 2012, 8:28 am

I have never tried to make this with raw coconut meat! I’m not sure how it would turn out.

    • Aida Veno March 31, 2013, 9:00 am

you have to shred the raw coconut first then dehydrate it and then mix it up, I’m going to be making this in my omega 8004

    • Lori September 21, 2014, 9:14 pm

I tried about a week ago thinking it would work well, but I didn’t have much luck, if you have let me know your tricks, maybe I didn’t let it go long enough, but i let it go longer than i do with dried coconut.
