This calming magnesium body butter combines the healing benefits of coconut oil, organic cocoa butter and essential oils with topical magnesium oil.

Keep calm.
Whether it be the holiday aftermath or day-to-day life, stress can wear you down and negatively affect your health for the worse.
I fell behind on meal planning, housework and got into the bad habit of staying up way too late this winter. This resulted in a tired unorganized mama!
The more I fell behind the more stressed I’ve been feeling day in and day out.
Which resulted in sugar cravings…
and baking…
and lots of chocolate.
Stress can deplete the body of magnesium and magnesium deficiency can lead to a ton of health problems.
I’m getting back on track now. What’s helping more than anything is, yep you guest it. SLEEP.
I’ve been forcing myself to go to bed by 9pm every night. Even if I don’t feel tired, I go to bed.
I’m taking my natural calm daily and I’m rubbing my belly and feet down with my calming magnesium body butter.
Taking magnesium transdermally (topically) is one of the best ways to get this magnesium into your body.
Adding essential oils like Lavender, Frankincense or Stress Away can benefit any stressed out mama. These oils help to alleviate stress and relax the whole body.
If you’re feeling stressed try getting more sleep, start your day with yoga and rub some calming magnesium body butter on your feet before bed. Soon you’ll be feeling zen and back to your normal self!
Magnesium body butter ingredients
You only need a handful of ingredients, but they’re all pretty specialized. If you buy in bulk, you can reuse them for other great recipes like my whipped body butter recipe, diy lotion bars, coffee scrub recipe, and homemade lip balm recipe!
Quality matters a great deal for these ingredients – so I’ve linked to some of my favorites that you can buy, plus additional articles if you want to DIY or do more research.
- 1/2 Cup Coconut Oil (the link is to my favorite coconut oil brand – if you want more methodology, here’s how I found the best coconut oil to buy; you can also easily make your own coconut oil at home!)
- 1/2 Cup Cocoa Butter
- 1/4 Cup Liquid Carrier Oil (I like to use fractionated coconut oil)
- 1/4 Cup Magnesium Oil
- 10 – 15 Drops of Essential Oils (I like to use Lavender, Cederwood and Frankincense)

I followed the recipe to a T. And it won’t get hard. How is that possible?!?! Any suggestions.
Same here. Let it sit overnight even and still liquid. Did anything work for you?

Mine did the same thing now twice…I just put it in the freezer. The only downside is it’ll sweat as it thaws…so I dab off what moisture I can. Next time I plan on adding some beeswax & see if that helps.
Mmmmh tmr mmmmh my

Yes, that’s the same ingredient!
Considering that magnesium oil is not actually an OIL but effectively a WATER based solution, you NEED to use a preservative to reduce the chances of bacteria and extend SAFE shelf life for use.
Water and oils/butters also tend to not ‘befriend’ eachother without a bit of help. To create a better lotion, one would have to introduce a (natural) emulsifier that can ‘bind’ water- and oil molecules together to achieve for a stable end product.
I totally agree with S, these points are exactly what i came to the comments section to say!
What do you suggest as a natural emulsifier?
Thankyou for saying this because I was going to. I would like to try this by simply melting the coconut flakes on the double boiler into the melted butters and then whipping to avoid introducing harmful bacteria.
Will heating the magnesium oil ruin it? I added the butter and oils together and started heating before I realized magnesium oil was in the next step.
I am wanting to use some magnesium powder I have would that work if I dissolve it in water first ?
Are you able to use a powdered magnesium in place of the magnesium oil? I have this, which we are to start using, and wondered if I could mix it in. I am guessing that I would need to mix it into a liquid before adding it either way. Just curious.
You can use Magnesium flakes which is fine. I just made mine yesterday.
Use 1/4 cup of Magnesium flakes, put in a small bowl and put in 3 tablespoons of boiling water, stir and wait for it to dissolve completely. Hope this helps 🙂
Helllooooo….anyone there. I have emailed Tiffany at 2 different email addresses, no answer, no replies here either. Tiffany hasn’t replied to this site since Dec 31, 2015. I love Coconutmama!! Hope nothing is wrong. She as always answered my emails in the past. Just wondering….
I just received my order of all the products to make the body butter. My question, do you add 10-15 drops of a combination of the essential oil or use only one of the oils? I ordered all three. Looking forward to making and using this. I rated it 4 stars only because I haven’t made it or used yet. Thank you for your time.

Hi Tiffany tried making the body butter and I ended up putting it into the fridge to harden it whipping is really out of the question as once it came back to room temperature the was still a fair amount of clear liquid. I ended up doing my best and then just putting it all into an airtight container. what is the liquid…magnesium oil or water ?
Question: I have been told that DMSO aids in the absorption of magnesium, but hesitate to use it because it was orignally used as a solvent. A friend told me her Chinese herbalist still recommended she use it along with her magnesium oil. Do you think it would be possible to add DMSO to this body butter?
I was wondering this. DMSO is good stuff I have been using it for yrs. The gel seems better to use in this context
My son is suffering from servere depression. He also has many other problems such as back pain and trouble leaving the house. What can i do to help him?
I got magnesium drops at a vitamin shop and would like to use them in a cream or lotion, but all I have to mix with is coconut oil. Can I just mix those two ingredients and still get a decent result, or should I wait until I can afford to get cocoa butter or shea butter to mix in with the coconut oil and drops?
I’ve been using magnesium topically for a couple years since I’ve always heard it’s better absorbed that way. Recently I learned about Mega Food’s Magnesium tablets which have a much higher absorbability rate and started taking them for nutritional support. What a huge difference! I still use a topical magnesium therapeutically for overexertion but taking one tablet in the morning and one in the evening before bed has made such a difference in my sleep and overall achiness, much more so than the topical ever did. My daughter also started taking it and her heart arrhythmia has improved as well.
GTH, Is this the magnesium you bought for your daughter: MegaFood – Magnesium, Supports the Health of the Heart & Nervous System. I going to make the “Calming Magnesium Body Butter” here, but am thinking about the tablets as well. Could you let me know if this is the same as what you are talking about? THis one says to take one a day any time of the day on an empty stomach. Thanks for the info!!
Another Carla……I would like to know also, if that is the Magnesium from MegaFood you are talking about. Thanks
My oil never harden. I used almond oil for my carrier oil. Can I save this stuff.
I just got all the ingredients to make
The Calming Magnesium Butter. The Cocoa Butter is extremely hard and difficult to get out of the tub to measure it. Any suggestions are appreciated. Christmas is almost here and need to get this made for a special gift for special people in my life. Thank you in advance.
I love this recipe. I have made and given Otto many people and they all love it. Making another batch now. I always add a little vitamin e to it.

Can I use peppermint essential oil in this butter? It is such a cooling oil, I really like it. 🙂
Can i substitute magnesium gel for magnesium oil in this recipe?
What would be a good substitute for the cocoa butter? Would Shea Butter work?
Sure! You can use shea butter.
do you have to use either (cocoa or shea butter)?
Hi Tiffany,
Could you share a direct link for the Cocoa Butter? When we click the link you shared, it sends us to Amazon with no direct link. I am hoping to get all of the ingredients gathered before Christmas. Love all your ideas! Thank you!
Please how do I make magnesium oil.?
You can make your own with magnesium flakes. Here are a few benefits: https://thecoconutmama.com/magnesium-why-you-need-it-and-5-ways-to-get-more-of-it/
The problem with this is that oil and water don’t mix. I tried this yesterday and followed the directions exactly but the magnesium oil/water mixture did not cool down like the other two so when I went to mix them, the magnesium oil/water did not mix in. I ended up having to dump most of the water out so have no idea how much magnesium is actually in my batch, if any. Can you come up with a suggestion to mix the magnesium oil water with the butters??
I have been using Magnesium Oil for over a year for my broken ankle. This helps my healing and I use Pan Away for the pain and am very satisfied with the results.
Glad to hear that, Fernie!
Is this a recipe that can be used on children and infants? My kiddos have some sensory/nervous system regulation issues and magnesium was recommended as being beneficial.
Yes! Absolutely!
