Are you looking for healthy snacks to make for your family? Try these healthy homemade fruit snacks! They’re delicious and made with real fruit, gut-friendly gelatin, and absolutely no artificial colors or corn syrup!
Like most kids, my children love fruit snacks!
I usually make a batch of homemade fruit snacks once or twice a month so I have healthy snacks on hand. What I like most about making homemade fruit snacks is my kids really enjoy making them with me and it’s a great way to get gelatin into their diet.
You may think it’s weird that I consider gelatin a “healthy” food. It is an animal by-product, made from the bones, skin and cartilage of animals. Sounds kind of gross, I get it! But before you disregard gelatin you should consider how it may be the superfood you need in your diet!
5 Potential health benefits of gelatin
Gelatin has many potential health benefits and uses:
- Want beautiful skin, hair and nails? Eat collagen rich foods like gelatin! As you age your body produces less collagen. Collagen is what helps keep your skin tight and smooth, your hair healthy and your nails strong. Gelatin is rich in the amino acid proline, which is used to tighten and firm the skin. Collagen is often used in topical creams designed to reduce wrinkles, cellulite and to tone the skin. You can receive these benefits by consuming gelatin in soups, stews, smoothies, drinks and homemade fruit snacks!
- Gelatin helps to heal the gut. Bone broth and gelatin-rich foods play a huge role in several gut healing protocols like the GAPS diet and SCD diet. That’s because gelatin helps to fill holes and damaged areas of the stomach lining and reduces inflammation. Gelatin also increases the amount of gastric acid in the gut, which is needed to break down and digest protein.
- Healthy bones need collagen! When you think of healthy bones you may think of calcium instead of collagen, but what you may not know is that you need both calcium and collagen for strong-healthy bones. Gelatin from bone broth or Vital Proteins Beef Gelatin is the best way to get collagen into your body.
- Gelatin is great for your joints. It’s common knowledge that collagen is needed for healthy joints (the connective tissues in our joints are made up of collagen). According to this study athletes who took a collagen supplement experienced less pain in their joints and saw an increase in performance!
- Gelatin is a good source of protein. There’s a whopping 6-7 grams of protein in every tablespoon of gelatin. Gelatin peptides are water-soluble (which means they don’t gel up) and can easily be added to smoothies or protein shakes. A diet rich in high-quality protein helps to support a healthy metabolism and keeps you feeling fuller and satisfied longer than low quality meals.
What kind of gelatin to use
There are several different brands of gelatin out there. I believe It’s important to use gelatin made from healthy animals. I personally use Perfect Supplements gelatin because their gelatin is sourced from animals that are sustainably raised, grass-fed and pastured raised. It also helps that their gelatin is virtually tasteless! If you tried adding gelatin into your diet in the past and couldn’t get past the odd taste, you don’t have to worry about that with Perfect Supplements. I’ve added their Gelatin Peptides (cold water-soluble gelatin) into my coffee, juice and smoothies without noticing a hint of gelatin flavor. Vital Proteins gelatin containers are also BPA free and come with a convenient scoop (approximately 1 tablespoon).
Note: Perfect Supplements makes two different types of gelatin:
- Beef Gelatin – Used to make gummies, fruit snacks, jello, panna cotta and custards. This gelatin will thicken when added to liquid.
- Collagen Peptides – Cold water-soluble gelatin that can be added to beverages (cold or hot) smoothies and soups. This gelatin does NOT gel up. I add gelatin peptides in my coffee, smoothies and juice.

Hi, I’m from the UK and I use 300 bloom of MM pork gelatine. My question is what bloom beef gelatine do you use?
I have read on MM website that the norm is about 250 bloom.
Catherine Aitmoussa
can you use agar in place of the gelatin?
Tiffany - The Coconut Mama
Yes!
Eclipsed
Does it have to be beef Gelatin? would unflavored gelatin work just as well?
The Coconut Mama
The gelatin I link to doesn’t have any flavor if that’s what you’re wondering. It’s the same as regular unflavored gelatin, but it comes from organic grass-fed cows.
Ginger
I tried the fresh fruit gummies today and they came out great. I used a combo of berries. Thanks for the recipe. I only had half the amount of beef gelatin available, so I halved the recipe, and it set in an hour in a glass dish. I am looking forward to trying your other gummy recipes!

Maureen Butler
Could you please tell me where to buy beef gelatine, and also raw honey, and natural calm for the magnesium gummies.
Autumn
I will have to look into the Vital Proteins. I tried the Knox-brand gelatin and nearly gagged on the smell alone. Thank you for the head’s up on it.
Lexi
Thank you for all these recipes! I LOVE making gummies for my 2yr old son knowing I’m not filling him full of addictive sugar & chemicals.
I would love to do as you say & make them once or twice a month but how long do they really stay good for in the fridge?
lisa
Hi – love the gummie recipes – just a heads up for anyone else. I made 2 different batches with Great Lakes brand of gelatin and they never did firm up. I have made gummies before with Great Lakes but used about double the amount. Will retry with 6 tablespoons of gelatin for the Strawberry Lemonade.

I agree with Tonya – I would love to eat more real food and eat something like this – however, I don’t have time to make everything. Someone needs to start making and selling real food to replace all the processed stuff on our super market shelves.
Tonya
if anyone is making these – I would love to pick some – and pay someone else to make them. Since I would have no clue how to do it…nor do I think I could spend $100 getting stuff I dont use or know how to use just to see if Angel will eat them.
So if you know anyone who is willing to figure out a price for me – my daughter loves strawberry flavors n gummy s.
I REALLY WISH healthy stuff was more cost effective…but its just not. We do a local co op that helps some…but Idk how you afford all the things you list.
Angela
I just made the magnesium gummies and they were super easy and yummy! I’m just starting to take magnesium. How many gummies should I start taking? Thanks!
Andrea
I was wondering the same thing. I know that a typical serving of Natural Calm is 2 tsp though I only take 1 tsp a day at the moment. I’m assuming 1/6-1/3 of the recipe can be eaten in one day?
Tania

The use of gelatine is so wrong!! On so many levels! It is a scientific fact that using any animal products actually depletes the body’s natural nutrition levels! There are far may superior plant based nutrients that are absorbed far more effectively than animal products! It is also cruel and unnecessary to be consuming animal products! However there are more people who are turning their back on meat and animal by-products!
Mrs_MG
Amanda, Please can you cite any published sources for your comments, so we may judge for ourselves? In particular, in what recognised scientific journals have you read evidence that using animal products depletes nutritional levels in humans? Just wondering where you got this idea, as I have *never* seen any such statements or conclusions from any scientific study, certainly not stated as “scientific fact”.
Sonia
Hi Amanda
I am just half way through studying a course on cell energy and mitochondrial health. I am having a lot of trouble agreeing with your comments. Please provide the published sources.
Robin
Can powder fiber be added to the fruit snacks and if so at what step in the recipe would you add the fiber? Would one fiber brand work better than another?
Betty Souther
I need your 3 ingredient fudge recipe that also has the option of using Essential Peppermint Oil with it. Thank you….I have tried to pull it up again but have not been able to do so!
Caitrin King
I have a problem getting the Vital Proteins to completely dissolve when making the fruit snacks. Any ideas on how to mix it completely?
Mary

Love the recipes you have provided here, can you advise a comparable gelatin to use for these treats if Vital Protein Gelatin can’t be used.

How do I get these fruit recipes? I cannot figure it out how to see these recipes?

On the pineapple, when you say “cooked,” does that mean canned is okay? Or do you actually need to warm it in a pan yourself? Thanks!
The Coconut Mama
Canned pineapple will work because it isn’t raw. 🙂

I love homemade fruit snacks. With the chocolate ones, at what point do you add the chocolate chips? I’d love to try those! Thanks
The Coconut Mama
