Makes four burger patties
2 cups black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup almond flour
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 teaspoon cumin
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon tamari
1 large egg (or flax egg for a vegan option)
Olive oil for cooking
Step 1: If not using canned beans, prepare the beans by simmering them on a stovetop until cooked (2 hours)
Step 2: Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix well.
Step 3: Mash the mixture a bit to create a texture that can be shaped into patties, but leave some whole beans for a bit of a chunky patty.
Step 4: Divide the mixture into four equal parts and shape each part into a patty. If the mixture is too sticky, you can wet your hands slightly to make shaping easier.
Step 5: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little olive oil. Once hot, place the patties in the skillet. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side or until they are crispy on the outside.
Step 6: Serve the black bean burgers on buns with your favorite toppings, such as lettuce, tomato, avocado, and a dollop of your favorite sauce. You can also enjoy the burger patty with some nice sides, like these zoodles and eggplant stew.
