Fresh off a string of factory and restaurant closures – unfortunately, California is losing even more factories as the unemployment crisis deepens.
California is the fourth-largest economy in the world all on its own, so when it has problems – that can signal bigger issues are incoming, fast.

And unfortunately, these new factory losses span a variety of different sectors within the broader food industry:
- Spreckels sugar beet refinery in Brawley (closing started in late July) – just a totally heartbreaking story that likely marks the end of California sugar beet farming.
- Blue Diamond Growers factory in Sacramento (shutdown announced in June, will proceed over the next two years, estimated 600 jobs lost).
- Foster Farms turkey processing plant in Turlock (closed in May, ~500 jobs lost)
- Hearthside Food Solutions in Anaheim (cookie / snack production facility closed in April with 175 jobs lost)
- Gallo Winery facility in San Miguel (closure just announced, will proceed in phases starting in December, with 47 total jobs gone).
