Grocery shoppers in California and Nevada are preparing to lose several familiar supermarket locations as one longtime regional chain rethinks where it can afford to operate. The closures come as grocers face intense competition and consumers remain cautious about spending on food.
Raleyโs announces more store closures
Raleyโs, a family-owned grocery chain headquartered in West Sacramento, California, plans to close three stores under its Raleyโs banner in the coming months.
The Brentwood, California, location is scheduled to close November 3, 2026, followed by the Elko, Nevada, store on December 8. The Petaluma, California, location is expected to close January 26, 2027. The company has attributed the decisions to local market conditions and the long-term financial sustainability of each store.
The closures follow three store shutdowns earlier in 2026, including locations in Roseville, Mountain View, and Antioch. Additionally, a Nob Hill Foods (a different banner under the same parent company) location in Los Gatos, California, is expected to close at the end of June 2027.
Why the grocery chain is closing stores
Raleyโs has emphasized that the closures do not represent a broader downsizing effort. Instead, the company says it continually evaluates individual store performance and decides where it can best invest to serve customers.
The supermarket industry has faced mounting pressure from inflation, changing shopping habits, and competition from discount retailers. Those challenges have made it increasingly important for traditional grocers to evaluate the financial performance of individual locations.
Raleyโs still plans to expand
Despite the closures, the company is not abandoning expansion. Raleyโs plans to open a new store in Madera, California, in March 2027.
Founded in 1935, the grocer operates more than 100 stores and employs approximately 11,500 people. Its portfolio includes Raleyโs, Nob Hill Foods, Bel Air Markets, and other grocery banners.
The planned openings and closures reflect the companyโs effort to focus investment on locations it believes can remain financially sustainable over the long term.
