After ten years of service, The French Goat officially closed its doors on January 31, 2026. The closure marks the end of an era for the small but vibrant dining community in Greenbrier County.

Owners cite challenges facing fine dining

In its announcement, the restaurant cited mounting pressures that have increasingly affected fine-dining establishments, particularly in smaller markets. “With the difficult economic conditions in the fine dining segment, we find it unsustainable for our concept at this time”, the restaurant’s Facebook page announced.

Like many independent restaurants across the country, the business faced higher operational expenses while customers increasingly opted for casual or lower-cost dining options. These economic headwinds made sustaining a high-end, labor-intensive concept increasingly difficult.

A major loss for Lewisburg’s food scene

The closure leaves a noticeable void in Lewisburg’s culinary landscape. Known for its refined French-inspired menu, meticulous presentation, and warm hospitality, the restaurant became a favorite for anniversaries, celebrations, and destination dining since opening in the summer of 2015.

Community members took to social media to express gratitude for years of memorable meals and impeccable service. Many noted that the restaurant played a key role in drawing visitors to downtown Lewisburg and supporting the area’s broader tourism economy.

Looking ahead

The Facebook announcement hinted at a possible return to the restaurant industry.  “If the stars align, we could be back in the spring with a new concept for The Goat so stay tuned for that”, the post read.
