An acclaimed Seattle fine dining destination is preparing to serve its final meals after nearly 10 years in business, marking the end of an era for one of the city’s most celebrated neighborhood restaurants.
Copine, located in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, announced it would permanently close in late May 2026, when its current lease expired. The restaurant first opened in 2016 and has earned a reputation for its refined French-inspired cuisine, seasonal Pacific Northwest ingredients and intimate dining experience.
Owners cite changing economics
Chef Shaun McCrain and co-owner Jill Kinney said the decision comes after months of evaluating the restaurant’s future amid an increasingly difficult business climate.
In a message to customers, the owners explained that operating costs and shifting economic conditions made it difficult to chart a sustainable path forward. While business remained strong enough to attract loyal diners, they said guest counts had declined, prompting them to rethink the future of the restaurant.
Rather than renewing the lease, the couple chose to close on their own terms and take a break after nearly a decade of operating the restaurant together.
Award-winning legacy
Copine quickly established itself as one of Seattle’s premier special occasion restaurants after opening in July 2016. In 2023, it earned a James Beard Award nomination for Outstanding Restaurant, adding to years of critical acclaim from local and national dining publications.
The restaurant planned to continue service through its final day, with a streamlined four-course prix fixe menu and special dining experiences designed to celebrate its final months. The owners also said they intend to keep their longtime staff employed through the restaurant’s closing.
Although Copine’s Ballard chapter is ending, McCrain and Kinney have hinted that the closure may not be the end of their culinary journey, leaving open the possibility of a future concept after taking time away from the demanding restaurant industry.
