
Georgia’s vibrant food scene experienced several losses in 2025 as beloved local institutions and established chains shut their doors amid economic pressures and shifting industry trends. Some of the most notable closures occurred in Atlanta, where one restaurant closed its doors after over 30 years.
On The Border
One of the year’s most notable closures was On The Border, the Tex-Mex chain that exited the Georgia market entirely. In early March, On The Border filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and simultaneously shuttered all six of its Georgia locations. The owner of On The Border, Argonne Capital Group, also operates Applebee’s, IHOP, and Wingstop franchises.
The chain still has several locations throughout the US, and the six closures in Georgia were a part of a total of 77 On The Border locations shuttering nationwide.
Eats Restaurant on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta
In mid-October, Eats Restaurant, an Atlanta institution for more than three decades, served its final meals on October 18th, 2025. The restaurant described itself as offering “affordable healthy fast food with delicious homestyle staples like baked chicken, meatloaf, [and] chicken lasagna”. The general manager noted property taxes and utility costs (citing a monthly water bill of $4k+) as key factors in the decision to close after 32 years.
Generations of Atlantans have marked birthdays, first dates, and routine dinners at the Ponce staple, making its closure a poignant moment for the city’s dining community.
Lure – seafood restaurant in Atlanta
Another significant closure came from Lure, a popular Midtown Atlanta seafood restaurant. After more than a decade on Crescent Avenue, Lure announced its closure on August 30, 2025.
Opened in 2012, the establishment had been a go-to destination for coastal cuisine and social gatherings. The restaurant expressed its plan to host private events through year’s end despite its closure, marking the end of an era for Midtown’s dining landscape.
These closures highlight broader challenges within Georgia’s restaurant industry, as both local favorites and national chains navigate rising costs, changing consumer habits, and competitive pressures. Despite strong openings in other parts of the state, 2025 will be remembered for the departures of some of its most cherished dining venues.
