Coconut oil has been a popular multi-purpose oil for many years in the skincare and haircare industries. However, it seems there’s a new kid on the block, in the form of the lightweight, moisturizing babassu oil – but which oil is best and why?
Both coconut oil and babassu oil are firm favorites among skincare/haircare fanatics, and they’re similar in many ways. However, they differ when it comes to their scents, textures, and manufacturing.
Continue reading to find out my ultimate verdict on babassu oil vs coconut oil, including their main similarities and differences, as well my recommendations as to which oil is ultimately better for you.

Similarities and differences between babassu oil and coconut oil
I’ve listed some key similarities and differences between babassu oil and coconut oil in the table below. Keep reading for a more detailed look at these comparisons!
| Similarities | Differences |
| Moisturizing benefits | Coconut oil is heavy while babassu oil has a lighter consistency |
| Good for sensitive skin | Babassu oil soaks into the hair quickly, which coconut oil would need to be washed out to prevent greasiness |
| Both start out as solid forms, but melt into the skin | Coconut oil has a sweet, nutty scent, while babassu oil almost scentless |
Similarities
Babassu oil and coconut oil are similar in several ways, primarily in their moisturizing and conditioning benefits. When used in the hair or on the skin, both oils will moisturize and give most hair types a healthier, shinier appearance.
They are also similar in their forms, with both oils starting out as a solid texture which then melts into the skin when warmed through the fingers.
Another key similarity between babassu oil and coconut oil is that both are appropriate for sensitive skin, as they don’t contain harsh ingredients that would typically aggravate sensitive skin types.
If you’re unsure whether these oils will be suitable for your skin, I recommend consulting with a dermatologist before trying either babassu oil or coconut oil for the first time.
Differences
There are a few differences when comparing babassu oil with coconut oil. For example, babassu oil has a much lighter consistency than coconut oil and is more likely to soak into hair and skin much more quickly than coconut oil. If used as a hair mask, you’d need to wash out coconut oil to avoid greasiness, whereas babassu oil can be left to sink into the hair.
Another noticeable difference between the two types of oil is their scent. Coconut oil has a pungent nutty aroma, whereas babassu oil has virtually no scent at all. While some may love how coconut oil smells, the fragrance isn’t for everyone, and some may prefer their oils to be unscented particularly if they have sensitive skin.
Best hair/skin types for babussu oil and coconut oil
I’ve gone into a little more detail below on the best hair/skin types for babassu oil and coconut oil. This should help you to ascertain which oil is best for your hair/skin type.
Babussu Oil
Babassu oil can be used on all skin types but is best suited to dry skin. If you have chapped or cracked skin, babassu oil will help to moisturize without stripping the skin.
In terms of hair, babassu oil is safe for all hair types, including hair that has been coloured. The hair type that will see the most benefits from babassu oil is dry, damaged hair, as this oil will help to provide a heathier, shinier look and feel.
Coconut Oil
Like babassu oil, coconut oil (which you can also easily make at home) is safe for all skin types. However, you may wish to avoid it if you have oily skin, as you may find coconut oil clogs pores due to its heavy texture. However, if you have dry skin, you’ll love coconut oil for its rich, moisturizing texture.
Coconut oil can be beneficial for all hair types but is best suited to those with dry, damaged hair. It should be used with caution if you have coarse hair, as coconut oil may lead to hair stiffness if overused.
