A longtime taste of Cincinnati has disappeared from Southwest Florida after two Skyline Chili restaurants in Naples and Fort Myers permanently closed following nearly four decades in business. The closures mark the end of an era for loyal customers who made the restaurants a regional staple for generations.
Closures confirmed in April
The shutdown was officially announced on April 21, 2026, when franchise owner Gates Rodenfels confirmed that both the Naples and Fort Myers locations were permanently closed. Reports indicated the Naples restaurant served its final customers that same day, while both locations were listed as closed during the week.
Nearly 40 years in Southwest Florida
According to reports, the two restaurants had operated for about 38 years, becoming popular stops for customers craving Skyline’s signature chili-topped spaghetti, Cheese Coneys and other fan favorites. The Florida locations built a loyal following among Midwestern transplants, snowbirds and longtime local residents.
Retirement led to the shutdown
The closures were tied to Rodenfels’ retirement after decades running the Southwest Florida franchise. Skyline Chili said the longtime operator decided to step away, leading to the permanent closure of both stores. The company added that it is searching for new franchise candidates who could eventually bring the brand back to the area.
Customers react to the loss
For many diners, the restaurants were more than places to eat. They served as gathering spots where families, seasonal residents and former employees created years of memories. Online reactions included disappointment, nostalgia and hopes that Skyline Chili will someday return to Southwest Florida.
Florida locations still remain
Despite the closures, Skyline Chili still has four remaining Florida restaurants, including locations in Clearwater, Sunrise, Winter Garden and Lakewood Ranch. The Naples and Fort Myers shutdowns, however, leave Southwest Florida without one of its most recognizable comfort-food chains.
