South Carolina diners are saying goodbye to another familiar local favorite after a year of notable restaurant closures across the state. SakiTumi Grill & Sushi Bar in Columbia has closed after 20 years in business, ending a two-decade run in the Vista entertainment district.
The restaurant announced its closure on September 17 and thanked the people who had chosen it for birthdays, date nights, family dinners and casual evenings out. WIS News 10 reported that SakiTumi opened in 2006 at 807 Gervais Street and had become one of downtown Columbiaโs longtime sushi destinations.

A familiar stop in the Vista
SakiTumi offered more than a standard sushi menu. Diners could order rolls alongside hibachi-style fried rice, calamari, lobster wontons and cocktails, giving the restaurant a broad appeal for groups that did not all want the same thing. Popular menu items over the years included creative specialty rolls as well as familiar choices such as California and spicy tuna rolls.
Its Gervais Street location also placed it in the middle of one of Columbiaโs best-known dining and nightlife districts. That made SakiTumi an easy choice for an evening that might begin with dinner and continue elsewhere in the Vista, or for a meal before an event downtown.
Why the restaurant mattered to regulars
In its farewell, SakiTumi focused less on individual dishes than on the memories people made there. The restaurant described itself as a place where celebrations happened, first dates unfolded and friendships grew over food and drinks. That is often what gives a 20-year restaurant its real staying power: not novelty, but familiarity.
Regulars knew the room, the menu and the rhythm of a night there. Employees and customers became part of the same long story, and the restaurantโs closing message credited both past and present staff with keeping the business going for two decades.
A bigger change in downtown Columbia
SakiTumiโs closure also comes during a period of turnover for sushi restaurants in central Columbia. Two other downtown sushi spots, TakoSushi and Camon Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar, closed in July, making SakiTumi the third notable sushi closure in the area within a few months.
The owners did not give a detailed public reason for shutting down, although the farewell acknowledged the effort required to keep the doors open. What is clear is that a restaurant that lasted from 2006 to 2026 earned its place in Columbiaโs dining memory. For countless customers, SakiTumi was not simply somewhere to order sushi; it was where a particular night out in the Vista began.
