The list of beloved Texas restaurants that recently closed has grown by one. French Sandwiches, a French-Vietnamese cafรฉ near San Antonio’s Medical Center, closed its longtime storefront after 36 years in business.
No final service date was announced to customers. By October 13, its signs still hung outside, but the dining room had been cleared. There was no note on the door explaining the closure.

A neighborhood fixture since 1990
In 1990, French Sandwiches began serving San Antonio. The founding year was printed on its menus and cited in a local review in 2009. The cafe sat in a shopping center near the city’s Medical Center. It became a familiar lunch stop in that busy neighborhood.
The menu bridged French bakery traditions and Vietnamese flavors. There were familiar turkey, ham-and-cheese and roast beef sandwiches, but more distinctive choices included pate, herbs and vegetables tucked into baguettes. Diners could also choose croissants instead of French bread. The shop built a following through these combinations rather than elaborate decor.
Its signature sandwich, the Chef’s Continental, combined sausage, sliced chicken and pate with vegetables on a baguette. An admiring 2009 review praised its homemade mayonnaise and pate. A later critic remembered its house-baked baguette, once known for its delicate crust.
Soup, cream puffs and repeat customers
French Sandwiches offered more than sandwiches. Meals could include soup or salad and a small cream puff for dessert. French onion soup was another favorite in customer reviews. Croissants and coffee gave the shop breakfast options as well. Together, these dishes made an ordinary lunch feel particular to this neighborhood cafe.
The dining room was simple, with a few pictures, tidy tablecloths and potted plants near the counter. Customers talked more about the food than about the surroundings. Some diners praised the bread and soup, while others described returning from outside the neighborhood for sandwiches they still craved.
Like many places with long histories, French Sandwiches received mixed reviews over time. A 2022 critic felt some sandwiches had lost the character he remembered from an earlier visit. Yet later customer comments continued to praise familiar dishes, including French onion soup and the Chef’s Continental. The cafe mattered to diners who had made it part of their routines.
The shop’s ending came without a farewell event. A customer found it shut on October 6. On October 13, a local reporter confirmed that the dining room had been emptied, even though signs still hung outside. The precise day of the last meal remains unknown.
The owners have not publicly explained the reason. No relocation plans have been confirmed.
After 36 years, the neighborhood has lost a distinctive lunch stop. San Antonio still has plenty of sandwich counters, but French Sandwiches had its own combination of baguettes, warm soup, croissants and tiny cream puffs. The customers who made it part of their routine will miss that familiar menu.
