Flaxseeds are a true superfood. These small but mighty seeds are packed with beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, and fiber.
And when you grind them into a flaxseed meal, or flour, you can throw it into your morning smoothie, sprinkle it over cereal or yogurt, and use it in your baked goods for an extra dose of nutrients. Oh, and did I mention that flaxseed meal is also a great vegan egg substitute for baking? Plus, it’s naturally gluten-free, paleo, and keto-friendly!

Brown vs golden flaxseed
Ground brown flaxseed is the most common and can be found at most grocery stores, but there’s also golden flaxseed, so what’s the difference?
Well, they have almost identical nutrition labels, but brown flaxseed contains slightly more alpha-linoleic acid (ALA).
I prefer using ground golden flaxseed in my baking, due to its lighter color and mild nutty flavor. But when I’m aiming for a fiber and nutritional boost, brown flaxseed is my go-to for adding to oatmeal and smoothies.
Flaxseed flour vs flaxseed meal
You’ll notice that some of the brands listed in this article are called flaxseed meal. The terms flaxseed flour and flaxseed meal are sometimes used interchangeably.
Both are made from ground flax seeds, but some flaxseed meals may be coarser than flaxseed flour.
So, if you’re looking for something to replace some of the flour in your recipes, I recommend looking for a “finely-ground” flaxseed flour or flaxseed meal.
How to choose the best flaxseed flour
It’s not just about grabbing any bag off the shelf – you deserve the best! Look for flaxseed flour that’s fresh and cold-milled. Cold-milling keeps those natural oils intact, ensuring you get maximum nutritional benefits.
Here are the key factors I considered when ranking the brands below:
- Ingredients: Keep it simple. Look for minimal ingredients and preferably organic options. Say no to preservatives!
- Consumer feedback: On top of my own experience, I looked at what other users had to say about a particular brand. I only choose brands with a lot of positive reviews.
- Nutrition: Check the label for that omega-3 goodness, lignans, and fiber. Brands with less sodium were given more points.
- Track record: Reputation and availability matter! Go for brands with a reliable track record and are easy to get your hands on.
- Price: Let’s be practical. Choose a brand that offers value without breaking the bank.
