California just can’t seem to catch a break.
With factories closing across the state at a furious pace…
In large part thanks to unprecedented business disruptions from the trade war and ICE raids throughout California…
The situation unfortunately seems to just keep getting worse.
And now even hometown hero Blue Diamond Growers, the almond cooperative that’s been part of the California business scene for a century, is having to cut jobs.
More specifically, Blue Diamond recently announced plans to close its Sacramento factory, a move that will impact 600 workers.
That closure will happen in phases across the next couple of years, so many of the workers will have lots of time and forewarning to find other jobs…but it’s still tough to lose your job, and it’s tough to come in every day knowing that it’s all coming to an end.
The Sacramento factory is quite old, and the inefficiencies of running operations in an outdated factory just eventually piled up to be too much.
Of course, nothing happens in a vacuum – Blue Diamond is facing many of the same pressures that are squeezing producers up and down the supply chain.
The recent trade war has decimated American exports, rapidly reducing foreign demand for US goods. And the domestic market has been on the downswing, too, as companies have ratcheted back hiring and layoffs have spread across the manufacturing sector.
Plus, let’s face it – as American workers have noticed the deteriorating economic conditions, many have tightened their belts and started saving money toward a rainy day.
And all of this, of course, comes on top of stubborn inflation and labor shortages that have rocked the food industry since the pandemic.
It’s a tough state of affairs for any company to navigate, so it’s no surprise that even a venerable name like Blue Diamond has had to cut costs.
And fortunately, many of Blue Diamond’s workers have lots of notice to think through what their next steps may look like.
