A major winery is shutting down one of its Napa Valley production facilities and reducing staff at several other Northern California locations as part of a broader restructuring driven by slowing wine demand. The closures and layoffs will impact nearly 100 employees and are set to take place between April 2026 and January 2027.
Ranch Winery in St. Helena set to close
California wine producer E. & J. Gallo Winery is closing several locations in the state. The most significant change is the permanent closure of Gallo’s Ranch Winery in St. Helena, Napa County.Â
The production facility, which has operated for decades, is scheduled to shut down in 2026 and will eliminate approximately 56 jobs, according to state labor filings. Gallo said some affected employees may be offered transfers to other company locations where possible.
Workforce reductions at additional wineries and tasting rooms
In addition to the Ranch Winery closure, Gallo is cutting jobs at several other Northern California sites. These locations are not closing entirely, but will see reduced staffing or scaled-back operations. Impacted sites include:
- Louis M. Martini Winery in St. Helena
- Orin Swift tasting room in St. Helena
- J Vineyards & Winery in Healdsburg
- Frei Ranch in Healdsburg
Combined, these reductions bring the total number of affected employees to nearly 100 across Napa and Sonoma counties.
Industry pressures behind the decision
Gallo cited shifting consumer preferences, declining wine consumption, and rising production costs as key factors behind the changes. Industry analysts note that younger consumers are increasingly choosing spirits, ready-to-drink cocktails, or non-alcoholic alternatives, leaving traditional wine producers with excess inventory.
A broader trend in California wine country
The closures and layoffs reflect a wider contraction across California’s wine industry, where wineries are consolidating operations, selling vineyards, or reducing output. While premium wines remain resilient, overall volume sales continue to soften (many of Gallo’s wines are in the sub $12 per bottle range, which hasn’t performed as well as premium wines).
Economic concerns for local communities
Local leaders and labor advocates warn that winery closures can ripple through wine-country economies, affecting hospitality, tourism, and agricultural jobs tied to production facilities. As the industry recalibrates, further consolidation may lie ahead.
