Intro

KFC and Popeyes have been duking it out for years now as each tries to hold on to runner-up status vs America’s #1 fried chicken brand.
But KFC’s newest bucket – its first in about a decade – is already making waves.
In fact, I believe it’s just about the perfect meal for any true fried chicken lover.
And here’s why:

What you get

This new bucket is called the “dunk it bucket” – and you get quite a bit for your meal:
– Depending on size and combo, 3-6 sauces;
– 2-4 chicken tenders (there’s also a “double dunk it bucket” option that gives you 10)
– Mashed potato poppers
– French fries
– All in a bucket whose top has little pop-out spots where you can put in your sauces so they don’t spill.
It’s simple, straightforward, and absolutely genius. Here’s why:

#1: The sauce is the star of the show

America wants sauce, and KFC has very clearly gotten the memo.
Their smallest dunk it bucket comes with three sauces(!) plus the little tray for holding them, as I mentioned earlier.
You can mix and match or just triple-down on one great flavor. Whatever works for you.
But it’s very clear that gone are the days where someone throws a couple packets of ketchup in the bag as you drive away.
Sauce isn’t an afterthought anymore.
And what amazing sauces!

The sauces

KFC gives you a lot of options, some quite traditional and some…well, a little less so. The full list:
– Comeback Sauce
– Sticky chicky sweet ‘n sour sauce
– Buffalo ranch
– KFC sauce
– Honey bbq
– Ranch
– Honey mustard
– Gravy (I guess you could dip things in gravy if you wanted, but seems weird!)
All to say – sauce is definitely at the center here, in a way that even Popeyes hasn’t really managed yet.
And there’s more…

#2: Chicken tenders ONLY

As you know, there are three keys to great fried chicken:
– Good flavor (obviously);
– Good crispiness; and
– The perfect ratio of meat to skin.
The nice thing about chicken tenders (which KFC uses in its newest bucket) is that, unlike bone-in chicken, you can really size to fit and make sure you get that ratio right. And if you’ve got a good recipe for fried chicken, then obviously that takes care of the flavor and crispiness.
KFC checks all three boxes with the dunk it bucket!

#3: Great sides

Just fried chicken gets, well, a little old if that’s all you’re having.
People want variety! (That’s one of the reasons the three sauces is such a smart move.)
KFC deliver with mashed potato poppers (yes, that’s a little ball of mashed potato that’s been fried) and a big scoop of fries.

#4: The price

KFC is, of course, an international chain – so prices may vary a bit between a super expensive state like California and somewhere a lot cheaper like North Dakota – but at my local KFC, the bucket is just $7.
That’s a great value for what is obviously a full meal.
And of course, you can upsize for more:
– Near me (your mileage may vary), the three piece bucket combo (with a drink) is $10.99,
– You can get four pieces for $12.99, and
– They even have a double dunk it bucket (with 10 pieces, six sauces, and four biscuits) for just $25.
That’s a great value, plain and simple!

Summary

So there you have it, four simple things that make the new dunk it bucket amazing.
From where I sit, it’s checking all the boxes.
(Heck, I’m getting hungry just writing about it, and it IS almost lunch time…)
So I’ll leave you with three questions:
