Eating out – and especially eating on the go – can be really tricky on a gluten-free diet. From the buns on our burgers to the breading on our chicken fingers, gluten is pretty much everywhere. But with so much of America eating gluten-free today, whether due to an allergy or simply a dietary choice, it’s becoming easier and easier to find meals that fit the bill for a gluten-free lifestyle. Even at our favorite fast food joints.
Whether it’s a dedicated section on the menu or easy-to-modify food and drink items, restaurants and fast food chains everywhere have had to become more accommodating for their many customers with celiac disease or dietary restrictions – and Chick-fil-A is no exception.
The fan-favorite franchise, beloved for their classic chicken sandwiches, has plenty of options on their menu for gluten-free customers. So if you follow a gluten-free diet and you’re looking to “eat mor chikin”, as the iconic cows would say, what exactly can you order from Chick-fil-A? We’ve got the complete list of every gluten-free item on the menu.

Gluten-free food and drink options on the Chick-fil-A menu
Chick-fil-A has a fairly modest menu to begin with, but an impressive amount of that menu is actually gluten-free (or can be easily modified to be gluten-free). So whether you have celiac disease, a gluten sensitivity, or you choose to avoid gluten for any other reason, Chick-fil-A is a great spot to swing by for a quick and delicious meal.
The first, and most important, thing to note is that while many of their menu items are gluten-free, this is still a fast food chain – and that means that cross-contamination is always a possibility. As a quick-service restaurant, Chick-fil-A uses shared food preparation and cooking areas, so the franchises can’t necessarily guarantee something is 100% gluten-free. If you have celiac disease or if potential cross-contamination is a concern, that’s something to keep in mind when ordering from Chick-fil-A (and pretty much any other fast food chain).
That said, the chain does have a plethora of food choices that don’t contain gluten – including a gluten-free bun (which can be hard to find at most fast food spots)! Chick-fil-A offers a pre-packaged bun that’s made of ancient grains like sorghum, amaranth, millet, quinoa, and teff. It can replace the regular bun on any of their sandwiches, which means you can still enjoy a tasty chicken sandwich. And pro tip – you can always ask for your order to be served “protein style” for a lettuce wrapped option!
The key to ordering gluten-free at Chick-fil-A will be sticking to their grilled proteins. Unfortunately there’s no way to get around the breading on the fried nuggets and chicken sandwiches – but the good news is that Chick-fil-A offers grilled versions of their menu favorites and several protein options for their salads. If you’re craving something sweet, the cookies and brownies are no-gos, but Chick-fil-A milkshakes and ice cream are all deliciously gluten-free.
Without further ado, here’s every food and drink item on the menu at Chick-fil-A, along with any required order indications or modifications, that you can order for some gluten-free fare on the go.

Yes! Chick-fil-A introduced a gluten-free bun in 2017. It’s made with a mix of ancient grains and comes pre-packaged to avoid cross contamination. The gluten-free bun can be substituted on any sandwich for an additional charge.
It may not be widely known, but you can ask for your meal “protein style” at Chick-fil-A and most locations will be able to accommodate the request. This means that your sandwich will come wrapped in lettuce instead of on a bun.
Yes! There is no flour or gluten used in Chick-fil-A’s waffle fries, and their hash browns are gluten-free as well.
The shakes are Not gluten free. I work there, am also a celiac & the shakes are all stirred with the same wand, including the cookie shakes. So the shakes are definitely not gluten free in any flavor. The ice dream itself may be but that is all.
Ohh good to know. Thanks for your input!!
