
Bad news for coffee drinkers: coffee prices have jumped a lot in the last year. According to statistics, prices increased over 20% from August 2024 to August 2025. As a result, many fans of the morning brew are looking for ways to get more cups out of the same bag of beans. Fortunately, with a few simple strategies, you can enjoy your favorite flavors while spending less.
1. Opt for milk-based espresso drinks
Lattes (my personal favorite) and cappuccinos are excellent options for stretching coffee. By combining espresso shots with steamed milk, you can enjoy a satisfying cup that feels indulgent while using less coffee per serving compared to brewed coffee. A single shot of espresso mixed with milk produces a drink that feels much larger than the coffee alone. (You’ll still get plenty of caffeine with a shot of espresso since it’s much more concentrated than drip coffee.)
2. Try an Americano
Americanos are another coffee-saver favorite. Simply dilute a shot of espresso with hot water, and you get a full cup of coffee flavor without brewing a full pot. This technique allows you to enjoy a classic coffee taste while reducing your bean usage.
3. Experiment with coffee “stretchers”
Consider using alternative liquids to boost volume. Adding frothed milk, oat milk, or even a dash of flavored syrup can create a more filling drink while maintaining a balanced taste. Some coffee lovers even mix cold brew with sparkling water for “sparkling cold brew” – not my cup of tea, but others like it!
4. Skip the second (and third…) cup
If you typically drink more than one cup of coffee per day, consider alternating coffee with tea or another warm beverage. While lattes are my preferred morning drink, I also love making chai tea lattes at home, which provides caffeine and is just as satisfying as coffee in the morning.
With a few small adjustments, coffee enthusiasts don’t have to sacrifice enjoyment as prices rise. Whether you’re indulging in a creamy latte, a bold Americano, or an inventive iced creation, you can stretch your beans further—and still get your morning fix.
