Wegmans is continuing its aggressive North Carolina expansion, with new stores planned in Charlotte and Holly Springs as the popular grocery chain deepens its presence in one of the country’s fastest-growing states.
Wegmans expanding deeper into North Carolina
Wegmans announced that its first Charlotte-area store will open on October 14, 2026 in the Ballantyne neighborhood. The 110,000-square-foot supermarket is expected to employ about 450 workers and will become the company’s fifth North Carolina location.
The Charlotte store will feature Wegmans’ signature prepared foods, sushi, bakery, seafood, and produce departments, along with the company’s first outdoor seating and play area concept. Construction on the site began in 2024 through a partnership with Northwood Investors LLC.
Wegmans currently operates North Carolina stores in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, and West Cary. The grocer first entered the state in 2019 when it opened its Raleigh location, which also marked the company’s 100th store overall.
Holly Springs store still moving forward
In addition to Charlotte, Wegmans continues advancing plans for a long-discussed Holly Springs location near NC Highway 55 and Ralph Stephens Road.
Town documents show the project received another extension in July 2025, with Wegmans now anticipating groundbreaking sometime in mid-to-late 2026. There is no current timeline for the anticipated opening for the Holly Springs location, which would span roughly 99,000 square feet and has been in development discussions since 2019.
Grocery competition intensifies
Wegmans’ continued growth is intensifying competition among grocery chains across North Carolina, where Publix, Lidl, Sprouts, Harris Teeter, and Food Lion are all expanding aggressively.
The company says North Carolina remains a major long-term growth market thanks to rapid population increases and strong consumer demand for premium grocery offering.
