Intro

I just had Buc-ee’s Beaver Nuggets again the first time, and let me tell you – they were delicious.
That may be surprising given the title of this piece, but here’s the thing:
They can be delicious…and yet superfans of other brands can still argue that they’re not as good as some of the other excellent options out there.

The taste

I had forgotten how sweet the Beaver Nuggets were (I had original flavor – not their salted caramel, which if I remember correctly is even far sweeter).
I had remembered something a little more balanced, but they definitely hit me with sugary notes of caramel and butterscotch throughout.
They were addictive.
(My two year old loved them too – that’s a picture of them on our deck before we shredded through them.)
But here’s the thing…
The Coconut Mama
But the best?

While they were superb – and I’d get them any time on a road trip – I know lots of snack fans out there who would argue that there are just some clearly superior options in the “sweet crunchy snack that looks kind of like popcorn” category.
Starting with an old-time favorite…

Cracker Jack

Did you love Cracker Jack as a kid?
I sure did.
And it wasn’t just the prizes.
(I mean, don’t get me wrong, the prizes were fun.)
But even as an adult I keep coming back to it. For the simple reason that:

That combination of caramel-coated popcorn and sweet peanuts is just so addictive.
Part of it is the mixture of textures – the popcorn is softer, the peanuts add crunch.
Part of it is the flavor – sweet and salty just always wins in my opinion.
I love the balance it brings. And hey, I’m all for the nostalgia as well!
This next option isn’t nostalgic, but it’s just objectively fantastic:

Moose Munch

If you ever received one of those special Harry & David gift baskets as congratulations for hitting some milestone, you know EXACTLY how good Moose Munch is.
It’s popcorn, usually coated in something delicious and mixed with something else. My personal favorite is the dark chocolate butter pecan, but chances are good you’re familiar with their better-known classic caramel.
They’ve got a ton of flavors for different palates stretching from their sweetest (probably sugar cookie) all the way to their savory party snack mix, and every one of them is delicious.

All the flavors

Here’s a full list of the flavors they offer:
– Hot cocoa
– Chocolate macadamia nut
– Mixed milk chocolate
– Chocolate churro
– Super party snack mix
– Milk chocolate s’mores
– Peppermint bark
– Cheddar snack mix
– Sugar cookie
– Moose Munch + peanut M&Ms (yes please)
– Cookies n cream
– Mixed dark chocolate
– Classic caramel
– Milk chocolate-covered
– Dark chocolate butter pecan (again, my favorite)
– Sweet & spicy

Moose Munch (continued…)

I mean, think about it –
If you want maximum sweetness, you can go for the sugar or churro flavors.
For a more balanced approach, dark chocolate butter pecan or their classic caramel.
For sweet and spicy – the flavor by the same name.
For cheesy, go cheddar.
It’s hard to compete with that!
And then there’s the “maximum nostalgia” option…

Kettle Corn

I remember getting kettle corn at the state fair.
I think it was more or less my first experience with the sweet and salty combination of flavors.
Kettle corn has this great balanced approach to delivering both sweet and salty that makes it an incredibly popular snack.

Corn Pops

Corn Pops cereal is an old favorite – and I’ve heard from several friends who prefer a bag of Corn Pops to Beaver Nuggets.
In general, the argument goes something like this:
Beaver Nuggets are just a little too sweet – and Corn Pops give you a much more balanced crunch that still has that hint of sweetness.
I’m not sure if I agree – I think they’re just two different flavors for different moods – but I didn’t want to suppress a good argument just because I don’t agree with it.
But here’s one I know LOTS of people agree on:

Beaver Nuggets

Which is – if you don’t love original flavor Beaver Nuggets…try the others!
Including…
– Cinnamon sugar
– White cheddar
– White cheddar habanero
– Sea salted caramel
– Bold ‘n spicy
…and let’s face it, there always seems to be another flavor whenever I drop in.
Let’s face it:

We all love different things

Everyone has different tastes.
If you’re looking for spicy with your crunch, original flavor Beaver Nuggets aren’t gonna cut it.
(Although bold ‘n spicy probably will!)
I think a lot depends on what you’re in the mood for and what you’re hoping to get out of your snack.
Which brings me to two important questions:
Shutterstock
The BIG questions:

#1: What’s YOUR favorite flavor of Beaver Nuggets? And,
#2: Are Beaver Nuggets better than kettle corn, cracker jack, moose munch, and corn pops? Or does one of them occupy an even more special place in your heart than Beaver Nuggets?
