Intro

Those lucky enough to try it know that Fatburger is a truly great hamburger joint.
But is it “the last great hamburger stand” as its motto says?
Maybe…but the competition has really heated up in the decades since it was founded in 1947.
Here are 9 other remarkable hamburger restaurants that can make the claim to be the best.
You’ll probably see a few names you’ve never heard of, but should definitely try!

Whataburger

Claim to fame: While Fatburger has a lot of competition in its home state of California, Whataburger is THE burger chain in Texas with over 700 locations.
Just seeing that orange and white makes Texas beef lovers salivate!

Smashburger

Claim to fame: While Smashburger didn’t invent the smash burger (confusing!), it certainly helped make it super popular. The style of smashing the patties to sear in the flavor has been popular around the Great Lakes for some time, it took this Denver-based chain to spread the deliciousness.

Farmer Boys

Claim to fame: For a state famous for its vegetarians and vegans, California sure does create a LOT of excellent hamburgers. Count Farmer Boys among them. Their motto is “Farm Food Ain’t Fast Food” and their award-winning burgers are enhanced by a focus on the freshness and quality of the ingredients, including often sourcing from local farmers.

Culver’s

Claim to fame: OMG! If you haven’t been to Culver’s, you need to get out to the Midwest (they’re based in Wisconsin but they’ve expanded quite a bit!) to the heart of Culver’s country. Midwesterners love their food, and this is probably the favorite burger there. That’s a strong endorsement!

Shake Shack

Claim to fame: This is the fast food that foodies can behind. With its roots in super-high-end dining in New York City, Shake Shack doesn’t take a backseat to any chain for quality. The Double ShackBurger is the one to try!

Habit Burger and Grill

Claim to fame: Habit Burger and Grill is, you guessed it, from California. Here’s all you need to know. The Charburger is so good that a certain super-respected consumer magazine tested it out and declared it the best burger in America at one point. Worth a try!

Mooyah Burgers

Claim to fame: OK, it’s not JUST Whataburger in Texas. Mooyah is a relative upstart with about 100 locations now. They tout their Certified Angus Beef and have some wild creations like the Hamburdog (it’s a hamburger topped with a hot dog, cheddar cheese, bacon, jalapenos, fried onion strings, and ketchup). And they have both Jennie-O turkey burgers and Dr. Praeger’s black bean vegan burgers for non-beef eaters.

Wahlburgers

Claim to fame: This one’s the most controversial one on this list. Yes, it’s owned by the celebrity Wahlberg brothers (Mark and Donnie along with the chef in the family, Paul). And, yes, it’s extra famous because of its reality show. But you gotta love a place that serves “government cheese” on its signature burger as a hat tip to their hardscrabble youth.
Some love it, others not so much.
The next one is maybe Fatburger’s biggest competition in its home market…

In-N-Out

Claim to fame: In-N-Out may be the California “big brother” with double the total locations. Like Fatburger, it was started in the lat 1940’s. And it’s got so much celebrity love and fanfare with its secret menu and “Animal Style” option.
The burgers are good, too. And oh-so-stackable.

Fatburger

Claim to fame: We couldn’t leave without giving Fatburger its due. Such a delcious burger to begin with. And then you have to love the ability to add over-and-above toppings like chili, eggs, or onion rings.
It has a strong case…but so does its competition.
Is Fatburger truly the best? Does it even beat In-N-Out? Let us know in the comments section.
