Intro

If you’ve never hard a Hardee’s Frisco combo…let me tell you right now, you’re missing out.
There’s just something about the combination of toasted sourdough, beef, bacon, and cheese that’s hard to describe…but incredibly delicious.
And if – like me – you grew up eating Hardee’s regularly, you’ve got fond memories of all kinds of delicious food they’ve made over the years.
But let’s face facts…

Great competition out there

There are a LOT of great burgers out there today.
Some from new entrants, and some from old competitors who have stepped up their game.
I’ve selected a handful whose fans would absolutely claim they’re better than Hardee’s at this point.
Get ready to start drooling…

Five Guys

If you’ve never been to Five Guys, stop reading this and go get one of their classic smash burgers.
They’re a little on the pricey end, for sure, but they are absolutely fantastic – crispy on the outside, juicy in the middle.
Plus, you can customize with all kinds of toppings.
All the normal ones, of course, but also quite a few unique options – jalapenos, steak sauce, and more.
And they’re in all 50 states! So there should be one local to you.

In-N-Out

If you’ve ever met someone from California, chances are good that at some point they’ve talked to you about how great In-N-Out is.
Their “Double-Double” burger is absolutely beloved up and down the West Coast – in part because of In-N-Out’s special sauce, and in part because it’s just so good.
In-N-Out doesn’t have an expansive menu with tons of options, but every burger is well-executed, and the staff are incredibly friendly.
(Order anything on the menu “animal style” and thank me later.)
It’s still primarily a West Coast chain, but In-N-Out has been gradually moving east.

Whataburger

If Hardee’s got you into burgers with non-traditional buns, consider Whataburger.
A Texas chain that has absolutely exploded in popularity across the country, their burgers can come on regular buns, brioche buns, or even Texas Toast.
Try the avocado bacon burger!

Culver’s

Culver’s is a midwestern chain that has also been gradually expanding its footprint, so if you don’t have one nearby, hopefully that’s about to change.
Because their “ButterBurger” is one of the tastiest options out there – they butter the bun, so you get a really delicious and crispy bun to complement their delicious burgers.
And if you’re missing Hardee’s, you can even get their sourdough melt!

Smashburger

Like Five Guys, Smashburger smashes their patties thin so they’re crispy on the outside while still juicy and delicious in the middle.
(Oh, and so you can get your mouth around their double-patty burgers.)
Their double bbq bacon smash is genuinely the best fast-food burger I’ve ever had, full stop.
Plus, you have the option of fries, sweet potato waffle fries, or tater tots.

Shake Shack

Shake Shack built a name for itself with its fancy burgers, and it’s well-deserved.
Their SmokeShack, ‘Shroom burger (vegetarian), and their Shack Stack (a burger topped with a fried mushroom burger, all on a bun with ShackSauce, cheese, lettuce, and tomato) are all a little off the beaten path…and they’re all delicious!
But in all fairness, they also have traditional flavors like a cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburger, BLT, etc.
It’s just all about what YOU want to order! (And speaking of – get their crinkle cut fries while you’re there.)

Jack in the Box

Like In-N-Out, Jack in the Box is originally from California, but it’s now expanded into 22 different states.
And like In-N-Out, it has tons of rabid fans.
That’s where the similarities end, however, because Jack-in-the-Box has a ton of different burger options – each more over-the-top than the last.
There’s the sourdough jack (which is a lot like Hardee’s Frisco)…the ultimate cheeseburger (two patties and two slices each of American and Swiss cheese), the Big Smashed Jack (double cheeseburger, triple bun, it’s a delicious, and gooey mess), and so many more.

And of course…Hardee’s

Listen, I couldn’t leave without giving Hardee’s its due.
Hardee’s has great burgers, a great breakfast, and a delicious alternative sandwich in their big hot ham ‘n’ cheese.
And let’s face it – if you haven’t had the Frisco combo…you’re missing out!

Summary

So there you have it – seven burgers with a legitimate argument that they’re better than Hardee’s.
(Sorry McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, etc. – you just couldn’t make the cut!)
And each of them has their pros and cons, for sure!
But here’s the REAL question…

Summary (continued…)

What do YOU think?
Is Hardee’s still on top?
Or has one of these competitors dethroned it for best burger?
Or is it someone I haven’t even mentioned?
