Texas shoppers have watched restaurants and retailers make difficult location decisions throughout 2026, including a series of major chain closures across the state. In northwest Houston, however, one long-dark grocery store is finally preparing for a comeback.
Fiesta Mart plans to reopen its Bear Creek-area supermarket on Highway 6 in September, nearly nine years after Hurricane Harvey flooding forced the location to close. The store is expected to restore a familiar neighborhood shopping option while creating more than 100 jobs.
Harvey left the store empty for years
The Fiesta Mart near Highway 6 and Clay Road originally opened in 2001. When Hurricane Harvey overwhelmed the nearby Addicks Reservoir in 2017, floodwater devastated the surrounding area and made continued operation of the supermarket impossible.
The building then remained vacant for years. Local reporting has pointed to insurance and litigation complications as factors in the unusually long delay, while Fiesta itself changed ownership during that period.
A state permit filing later revealed a renovation project valued at approximately $3.5 million. The rebuilt supermarket is expected to encompass roughly 44,000 square feet, restoring a sizable grocery anchor to Bear Creek Village.
Hiring offers the clearest sign of progress
Fiesta began recruiting more than 100 employees for the returning store, including outreach to people who worked at the location before Harvey. Local reports have placed the hiring target as high as 120 positions.
The jobs and the September reopening window make this more than another early-stage permit story. After years of false starts and an empty building, the company is staffing the store and preparing to welcome customers again.
One detail should be verified before publication or a visit: local reports have used both 4310 and 4330 Highway 6 North for the property. The shopping center sits near Clay Road, and Fiesta should provide the definitive customer-facing address when it announces its opening date.
Another Harvey-damaged Fiesta Mart on the East Freeway remains closed, so the Bear Creek reopening does not signal that every long-shuttered location is returning. For northwest Houston residents, however, September could finally end a nine-year wait and turn one of the neighborhood’s most visible storm reminders back into an operating grocery store.
