“Reasons why I don’t order from here anymore. These prices are ridiculous.”
That Reddit post came with a photo: a Shaq-a-Roni pizza at $17.99, an Epic Pepperoni-Stuffed Crust pizza at $18.99, and after a $2 coupon, $8.99 in delivery fees, and $3.14 in taxes, a total of $47.11 for two pizzas before tipping the driver. The customer wasn’t ranting about a bad experience. They were doing math.
Papa John’s built its identity on a simple slogan: “Better ingredients. Better pizza.” For a long time, that positioning worked. The chain distinguished itself from Domino’s and Pizza Hut by emphasizing quality, and customers were willing to pay a modest premium for it. That premium has grown, and some customers are no longer willing to follow.

The price that got out ahead of the customer
Papa John’s own CEO acknowledged the problem in 2023, saying during an earnings call that “some of the pricing had gotten out in front of where the consumer was willing to spend,” as reported by CNN. North American same-store sales fell 1% in the second quarter of that year. The chain has since worked to adjust, but Reddit users remain vocal about a pricing structure that still feels steep, particularly when the ratio of dough to toppings is brought up.
A large pepperoni pizza currently runs around $17 to $19 at many locations without coupons applied. The Works, with six or more toppings, can reach $24. As one analysis put it, those aren’t shocking numbers in the current pizza market, but they become a harder sell when customers feel the quality hasn’t kept pace.
The delivery fee problem
Like most pizza chains, Papa John’s delivery experience has gotten more expensive in ways customers don’t always see coming. Delivery fees, service fees, and the expectation of a tip have turned what used to be a simple $15 pizza order into a $30 transaction before anyone has taken a bite. “Delivery pizza is so expensive now that it no longer makes sense to order it,” one Redditor wrote. “You can get a great freezer pizza and make it at home for $8.” Papa John’s still has loyal customers who feel the quality justifies the price. But the gap between what the slogan promises and what the receipt reflects is one more customers are pausing over before they hit order.
