Kroger recently announced plans to close 60 underperforming stores nationwide as the grocery giant right-sizes its store footprint and attempts to turn things around. That includes four grocery stores in Illinois that are closing this month.
Kroger is facing a number of big challenges – including a brewing fight with several union locals that could boil over into a strike, tariff impacts, and disruptions from the FDA synthetic dye ban.

So it makes sense that management is trying to narrow its focus – but that doesn’t change the fact that it stinks to lose these stores!
They are:
- Kroger in Peoria (closed August 2nd)
- Mariano’s (owned by Kroger) in Buffalo Grove (closed August 8th)
- Mariano’s in Bloomingdale (closes tomorrow, August 15th)
- Mariano’s in Northbrook (closing August 2nd)
It’s frustrating enough to lose the grocery stores as a shopper, but it’s even worse to lose your job – so my heart goes out to the impacted workers. (Silver lining – many are reportedly being offered the opportunity to transfer to other stores.)
