Illinois Buc-ee’s rumors have a less hopeful answer than they did a few months ago. An earlier look at why Illinois remains off the Buc-ee’s map found plenty of logical highways and nearby expansion activity, but no confirmed project.
The picture became clearer in August 2026. When Axios Chicago asked about an Illinois expansion, Buc-ee’s representatives said the company had no plans to open in the state.

The rumors versus the current reality
No Illinois Buc-ee’s has been announced. The company has not identified an Illinois property, filed a public plan, requested local approval or provided an opening timeline. Illinois also does not appear on Buc-ee’s current list of estimated future openings.
That makes this a rumors story, not a proposed-store story. Saying the company has no plans does not mean Illinois is permanently ruled out, but it does mean there is no reliable basis for assigning a city or opening year. Buc-ee’s operates its own stores rather than franchising them, so a local entrepreneur cannot independently bring the brand to Illinois.
Why the co-founder’s comments matter
At the August opening of Buc-ee’s first Arkansas store, co-founder and president Arch “Beaver” Aplin III said the chain increasingly values conservative, business-friendly states and communities that welcome its projects. His comments suggested that political and local-government support may influence where Buc-ee’s invests.
That could make an Illinois expansion look less likely in the near term, but it is not a formal ban. Buc-ee’s is building in politically competitive Wisconsin, and its existing expansion map does not follow one simple partisan line. Suitable interstate land, infrastructure, permitting and community support still matter.
Illinois drivers will have closer options
Illinois residents already can find Buc-ee’s in neighboring Missouri and Kentucky. A large store is also under construction in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, less than 100 miles from Chicago, while an Indiana project continues moving through the development process.
Those locations give Buc-ee’s access to Midwestern travelers without entering Illinois. They also weaken the idea that the chain simply has no interest in northern markets.
What would make an Illinois Buc-ee’s real?
The first meaningful sign would be a named property, a land-use application, a development agreement or confirmation from Buc-ee’s. A petition, social-media post or map of possible highway sites would still be speculation unless it led to one of those concrete steps.
For now, the most direct answer is also the least exciting one: Illinois has no announced Buc-ee’s, and the company says it has no plans to open there. The rumors may continue, especially as stores rise just across state lines, but Illinois drivers should treat any specific location claim cautiously until a real filing or company announcement appears.
