Those following a low-sodium diet most likely know that they usually won’t have much luck finding low-sodium food choices at a fast food burger joint.
At places like McDonald’s and Burger King, there may be a few options here and there on the menu that you can enjoy as a low-sodium snack…but at In-N-Out, we’re sorry to say you’ve got no such luck.
If you’re looking for something low in sodium to enjoy at In-N-Out, your only options on the menu will be beverages. Here’s why.

Low sodium food and drink choices on the In-N-Out menu
Hamburgers and cheeseburgers are notoriously high in sodium – processed meat, cheese, salty condiments, and burger buns are all pretty usual suspects when it comes to high sodium content. So it’s going to be tricky to find low-sodium food choices at restaurants that specialize in burgers, no matter where you go.
But the reason it’s pretty much impossible to find something low-sodium to eat at In-N-Out? The fast food restaurant is known for their short menu that’s simple and to-the-point. In fact, aside from some milk shakes and beverage items, In-N-Out really only has four food items on the entire menu.
This makes the chain’s offerings more streamlined and easier to choose from for customers…but it also means that the only thing available at In-N-Out is a burger or fries, and there’s no wiggle room to find items like salads, sides, or sometimes even sweets that tend to be lower in sodium.
While you do have the option to order protein-style at In-N-Out, which replaces the hamburger bun with lettuce and reduces the overall amount of sodium in the meal, ultimately any ordering option will result in sodium levels far too high to be considered low-sodium (which the FDA defines as 140 mg or less).
The french fries are the lowest-sodium food option on the menu, but even those are just a bit too high at 150 mg of sodium. You can enjoy some of them for a lower-sodium snack though – just not all of them!
So if you’re looking for a meal that’s low in sodium, you won’t find it at In-N-Out Burger. However, if you’re just rolling through for a refreshing beverage or something to sip on, you’re in luck!
You do have options when it comes to beverages at In-N-Out; all of the drinks offered on the menu fall under 85 mg of sodium for a medium size. Since the FDA defines a “low-sodium” item as anything with less than 140 mg of sodium, most of the beverages available will pass as a drink to accompany another lower-sodium snack.
You’ve got your choice of iced tea and coffee, which are both naturally very low in sodium, as well as several varieties of lemonades and sodas on the menu. Unfortunately the milkshakes, hot cocoa, and milk on the In-N-Out menu, while definitely lower in sodium than the food items, don’t meet that 140 mg threshold.

Depending on which burger you order at In-N-Out, they range between 660 and 1660 mg of sodium per burger. Ordered as is, the Hamburger has 660 mg of sodium, the Cheeseburger has 1070 mg of sodium, and the Double Double has 1660 mg of sodium.
It may depend on your location, but In-N-Out chains are typically very accommodating to customizing your order. It’s possible to ask for a burger or the french fries without any additional salt added while the food is cooked and prepared.
