Kroger history

If you’re unfamiliar with Kroger, it’s a grocery store chain that originated in 1883. Its founder, Barney Kroger, invested his life savings of $372 to open the first Kroger store.
Over the years, the chain grew to what it is today. According to data from the first quarter of 2025, Kroger is the third most popular grocery store behind Aldi and 7-Eleven. So why is Kroger shutting the doors to so many locations?

What Kroger has to say

According to a report released on June 20th, 2025, Kroger has this to say about the closures: “As a result of these store closures, Kroger expects a modest financial benefit. Kroger is committed to reinvesting these savings back into the customer experience, and as a result, this will not impact full-year guidance.”

Why are stores being closed?

There are a lot of factors at play behind Kroger’s closure of 60 stores. One major player is the rising cost of food, thanks in part to tariffs put in place by the current administration earlier this year.

Increasing food costs

According to Yale University’s Budget Lab, food prices are estimated to rise 2.8% overall due to tariffs, including a 4% increase for fresh produce. These increasing costs, along with consumers buckling down on their food budgets, likely play a big role in the store closures.

Financial woes

Another factor that likely led to the decision to close Kroger locations was the failed merger with Albertsons. The $25 billion merger plan was abandoned, and Albertsons sued Kroger over the ordeal (Kroger filed a counterclaim in response).

The Woodlands, TX

One of the locations in The Woodlands, Texas, just closed in April. Fortunately, there are two other Kroger locations in The Woodlands.

Dickinson, TX

The location at 3410 Gulf Fwy. in Dickinson (near Houston) was recently closed on June 10th after being in the community for 45 years. The closure came as a shock to the small town since Kroger was its only grocery store (the town was also hit hard by Hurricane Harvey in 2017). City officials are scrambling to find another company to fill the void left by Kroger.

Will more Texas Kroger locations close?

More Texas Kroger locations could be on the chopping block with the announcement of 60 closures over the next year and a half. Kroger hasn’t released an official list, but smaller or underperforming locations are likely at the greatest risk.
