The cafe first opened in a building connected to the old Southern Pacific rail station, serving meals to railroad travelers and local residents. Over time, it became a beloved neighborhood diner known for classic American breakfasts, burgers and comfort food.

Alfredo Mercado had worked at the restaurant for years before buying the business in 1998. The building itself, however, was owned by another party. According to Mercado, he reached a verbal agreement with the property’s longtime owner that allowed him to operate the cafe indefinitely.
Mercado has said the agreement essentially gave him lifetime control of the restaurant business, as long as he continued running it and paying rent. Because the arrangement was based on a handshake deal rather than a formal long-term written lease, its legal standing later became disputed following the original owner’s death.
Mercado alleges that the new landlords did not honor the original oral agreement and instead moved to remove him from the property. The disagreement escalated into a legal battle over who had the right to operate the historic restaurant.
Community mourns loss of local landmark
In the final days before closing, crowds lined up outside the restaurant as customers sought one last meal at the historic diner. Many longtime patrons described the cafe as a cornerstone of the community and a place filled with decades of memories.
