Major Georgia brewery to stop brewing at longtime facility after more than a decade

A well-known Georgia brewery is making a major change to its operations that could mark the end of an era for local beer fans. While the brewery itself isn’t disappearing, beer production is being moved out of the Athens facility where the brand has brewed for years.

Brewing operations will end in September

Terrapin Beer Co. will stop brewing at its longtime facility at 265 Newton Bridge Road in Athens, Georgia, on September 25, 2026. The change is part of parent company Tilray Brands’ broader restructuring effort, known as Project 420, which is designed to consolidate production and reduce costs.

The Athens facility is not being completely shuttered. Terrapin’s taproom, beer garden, warehouse, and repackaging operations are expected to remain open, allowing customers to continue visiting the longtime brewery even after brewing operations end. 

Tilray said brewing will be shifted to other facilities within its network. The move is intended to take advantage of the company’s larger brewing footprint and improve operational efficiency. 

A major change for an Athens institution

Terrapin was founded in Athens in 2002 and has become one of Georgia’s best-known craft beer brands. Its Athens location has served as an important part of the company’s identity, with a taproom, outdoor beer garden, live music, events, and brewery experiences.

The company currently describes the Athens location as the place where visitors can enjoy Terrapin’s beers “straight from the source.” 

The brewery’s closure of production is part of a wider restructuring by Tilray involving several of its beer brands. The company has identified production consolidation and facility closures as components of Project 420, with the initiatives expected to continue through fiscal 2027.

What happens to Terrapin beer?

Terrapin’s beer will continue to be produced, but it will no longer be brewed at the Athens facility once the September transition takes place.

For Athens beer fans, that means the familiar Terrapin location will remain a place to gather and enjoy the brand, but the brewing operation that helped establish the site as a local institution will come to an end.
