Major grocery chain implementing dozens of store closures across the country

A major grocery chain is continuing a sweeping store-closure plan that will affect shoppers across the United States. Dozens of locations have already shut their doors, with more closures expected before the end of the year.

Kroger closing 60 stores

Last year, Kroger announced plans to close approximately 60 stores by the end of 2026, saying some locations were no longer producing the sustainable results the company needed.

The Cincinnati-based grocery giant has already closed around 39 stores, according to recent reports tracking the closures. The affected locations operate under several Kroger-owned banners, meaning the changes extend well beyond stores carrying the Kroger name. 

The banners affected include Kroger, Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer, Fry’s Food and Drug, King Soopers, Mariano’s, Pick ‘n Save, QFC and other regional brands. 

Several states have already been affected

Closures have occurred in states including Texas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Among the locations already closed are Kroger stores in Houston, Atlanta, Louisville and several other cities. A QFC location in Mill Creek, Washington, and multiple Harris Teeter locations have also been affected. 

Kroger has not publicly released a complete list of all 60 locations to be closed, meaning additional communities could learn about upcoming closures as the company continues its review.

Why is Kroger closing stores?

Kroger has described the move as part of an effort to simplify its business and focus on stores that can support its long-term growth.

The closures are happening as Kroger simultaneously expands in other areas. The company recently announced a $1.65 billion agreement to acquire Giant Eagle, a deal that would add nearly 200 supermarkets and 11 pharmacies to Kroger’s footprint. 

For shoppers, the result could mean fewer familiar grocery stores in some communities while Kroger concentrates its resources on locations it considers more sustainable.

At least 21 additional stores could still close as Kroger works toward its 60-store target by the end of 2026.
