A major grocery distributor is preparing to close one of its Pennsylvania facilities, putting dozens of jobs at risk. The closure is part of a broader effort to consolidate the company’s distribution network and shift operations to other locations.
Pennsylvania facility set to close
United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) plans to close its distribution center at 2722 Commerce Way in Northeast Philadelphia, according to Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry records. The state’s WARN notice lists 48 affected workers, with the closure scheduled to take effect October 16, 2026.
UNFI is one of the country’s largest grocery wholesalers, supplying supermarkets and other retailers with food and consumer products. The company has operated from the Philadelphia facility for more than two decades.
The closure will bring an end to UNFI’s use of the Commerce Way warehouse, which spans approximately 100,000 square feet.
Operations shifting elsewhere
The Philadelphia closure is tied to changes in UNFI’s distribution network. According to industry reporting, the company plans to shift distribution activity away from Philadelphia and move operations to other Pennsylvania facilities.
The move comes as UNFI has made changes to its network in recent years, including other facility closures in the region. The Philadelphia Business Journal reported that the company has closed multiple facilities in the region, including locations in South Jersey and Allentown.
The Pennsylvania WARN filing does not provide a breakdown of the affected employees’ positions or specify whether any workers will be offered opportunities at other facilities.
Closure comes amid broader food-industry changes
UNFI’s Pennsylvania closure is among a series of food, distribution, and manufacturing facilities facing closures or workforce reductions in 2026.
For Philadelphia-area workers, the October 16 closure means dozens of positions at the Commerce Way facility are scheduled to be eliminated. The company’s broader distribution strategy could continue to affect where grocery products are processed and shipped throughout the region.
