Another Michigan plant has abruptly shut down, leaving more than one hundred workers without jobs and adding to a growing wave of factory losses across the state.
Pactiv Evergreen confirmed it has permanently closed its Kalamazoo facility, affecting about 153 employees, according to filings with state officials. The factory produced packaging materials for food and beverage companies and had operated in Michigan for many years.
The closure comes as trade tensions and tariff disputes continue to squeeze manufacturers nationwide. Simply put, the higher cost of raw materials and ongoing supply-chain volatility have made it increasingly difficult for smaller and mid-sized operations to stay competitive.
It’s hard to argue with the likely conclusion that broader global pressures – especially the negative impacts from boycotts of American goods and retaliative tariffs are playing a big role. With demand slowing and production costs climbing, companies across the packaging and food sectors are consolidating operations or shifting manufacturing elsewhere to cut expenses.
The loss is another blow for Michigan’s industrial workforce, which has seen repeated layoffs over the past year. Local businesses that relied on the plant’s activity are also expected to feel the impact, with fewer shipments, fewer contracts, and less spending in the area.
