Missouri has another entry in the list of grocery chains closing stores across the U.S. in 2026. KC Sun Fresh at The Shops on Blue Parkway permanently closed October 25, ending a six-year effort to keep a full-service grocery store in this part of east Kansas City.
Community Builders of Kansas City, the nonprofit that owns the shopping center and operated the supermarket, said declining sales, economic pressures and rising operating costs made the store unsustainable despite years of financial support.

A six-year grocery effort comes to an end
The store at 4209 E. 50th Terrace was not simply another lease in a shopping center. Community Builders became its owner and operator in June 2020 after the previous operator retired. The organization said it stepped in during the pandemic to keep groceries and jobs close to home for East Side residents.
About 25 employees were affected by the closure. Community Builders said each team member was notified and offered a transition package that included severance and help connecting with new employment opportunities. The organization did not say whether any workers had already secured new positions.
The shutdown followed months of visible strain. Local shoppers had reported sparsely stocked shelves and limited selection before the closure, while Community Builders continued subsidizing the operation. The storeโs last day was Sunday, October 25, and permanent-closure signs were posted on the doors the next morning.
Community Builders will continue to own The Shops on Blue Parkway. It said the building will be kept secure and maintained while the nonprofit seeks a new use that can bring goods, services and jobs to the property. No replacement grocer or timeline has been announced.
Shopping trips will be longer for some customers
The closure signs directed shoppers to three alternatives: Price Chopper at 6327 Brookside Plaza, Aldi at 6415 Troost Avenue and Walmart Supercenter at 10300 East Highway 350. Community Builders described those stores as options within a five-mile radius.
That still changes the practical choices for people who relied on the Blue Parkway store. Shoppers told local reporters that the closure would mean traveling farther for groceries, and some raised concerns about neighbors who depend on buses or need a close option for a few items.
What happens next
The closure is permanent, but the future of the supermarket space remains open. Community Builders said it is shifting resources toward housing, commercial real estate and workforce-development projects while looking for another use for the center.
For east Kansas City residents, the immediate result is one fewer neighborhood supermarket and a different route for weekly shopping. The two unanswered questions are whether another food retailer will take the space and where the roughly 25 departing workers will land.
