Another food-processing facility is preparing to close its doors, putting more than 200 workers out of their jobs. The shutdown is the latest major blow to Nebraska’s food manufacturing industry this year, following several other high-profile plant closures and layoffs.
Skylark Meats, a meat-processing company owned by American Foods Group, is permanently closing its Omaha facility on August 25. According to a WARN notice filed with the Nebraska Department of Labor, 218 employees will be affected by the closure.
Plant will close permanently
The 215,000-square-foot facility at 4430 South 110th Street produces a variety of meat products, including cut steaks, liver, marinated meats, and other fresh meat products.
The company notified employees that the closure is expected to be permanent, with all operations ending at the close of business on August 25.
American Foods Group described the decision as difficult and said it plans to support affected employees during the transition. The company is encouraging workers to apply for available positions at some of its affiliated facilities.
Another major food industry job loss
The Skylark closure comes during a difficult year for Nebraska’s food-processing workforce.
The Omaha plant is the second major meat-processing facility in Nebraska to close in 2026. Tyson Foods shut down its Lexington beef plant earlier this year, resulting in thousands of job losses. WK Kellogg is also in the process of closing its Omaha cereal plant, affecting more than 450 workers.
Nebraska Public Media recently reported that the state’s food-processing industry has been affected by tariffs, declining exports, increased automation, and historically low cattle numbers.
For Omaha, the Skylark closure means another major food-production employer will soon disappear, with hundreds of workers facing the loss of their jobs by the end of August.
