A once-popular regional restaurant chain is shrinking rapidly after filing for bankruptcy, underscoring ongoing challenges facing the casual dining industry. The company, which built a strong following in the Midwest, has closed most of its locations in recent years. Now, it is turning to bankruptcy protection in an effort to stabilize what remains of the business.
Taste of Belgium’s bankruptcy filing
Taste of Belgium, founded in Cincinnati in 2007, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as it works to reorganize its finances and continue operating. The brand, known for its Belgian-style waffles and brunch offerings, expanded across Ohio and Kentucky during its peak but has since seen a sharp contraction.
Closures drastically reduce footprint
At its height, the chain operated more than 10 locations. However, over the past two years, it has closed at least eight restaurants, including several in Ohio and all of its Kentucky locations.
Today, the company is down to just three remaining locations—all in Cincinnati—highlighting how dramatically its footprint has shrunk.
Financial pressures mount
The bankruptcy filing follows mounting financial strain tied to inflation, rising labor and food costs, and shifting consumer habits. The company also cited declining downtown foot traffic and increased reliance on delivery platforms as contributing factors.
Like many regional restaurant brands, Taste of Belgium expanded during a more favorable economic period and is now struggling to adjust to a higher-cost environment.
Ohio roots remain key to survival
Despite the closures, the company’s identity remains closely tied to Ohio. Executives say the bankruptcy filing is intended to preserve the business, not shut it down, with a renewed focus on its core Ohio locations.
“We’re OPEN. Taste of Belgium has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection so we can keep moving forward,” the company said in a social media announcement.

As the restructuring process moves forward, additional changes could still occur. For now, the company’s future depends on whether it can stabilize operations and rebuild from its remaining Cincinnati base.
