Panera Bread is continuing to reshape its restaurant footprint as the bakery-café chain works to revive sales and modernize its business. While the company is opening and remodeling locations, some underperforming cafés are quietly disappearing from the map.
Panera continues to trim its restaurant footprint
At least two dozen Panera Bread locations have closed since last summer. California has seen the largest number of closures, while cafés have also shuttered in Iowa, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The report also noted that more than a dozen Houston-area locations closed following the bankruptcy of a major franchise operator.
Despite the closures, Panera says its overall footprint is still growing. The company has opened 23 new bakery-cafés in 2026 and expects to open at least 25 additional locations before the end of the year as it invests in markets with stronger long-term potential.
Company invests in a broader turnaround
The closures come as Panera executes its “Panera RISE” turnaround strategy under CEO Paul Carbone. The initiative includes remodeled cafés, expanded menu offerings, larger portions on select items, improved value, and investments in customer service and technology designed to make ordering faster and more convenient.
A challenging environment for restaurant chains
Panera’s restructuring reflects broader challenges facing the restaurant industry as operators contend with higher labor and food costs alongside more cautious consumer spending. While it’s common for restaurant brands to close underperforming locations, Panera is betting that strategic investments and selective expansion will strengthen the brand over the long term.
The company’s strategy demonstrates that growth isn’t always measured by opening more restaurants. In today’s competitive environment, many chains are choosing to close weaker locations while focusing resources on markets they believe offer the greatest opportunity for future success.
