“Popeyes prides itself on terrible customer service, it’s like a metric they strive for.”
That comment, posted in the r/Popeyes subreddit, is pointed — but even Popeyes’ most vocal critics tend to separate the service complaint from the food itself. The chicken, by most accounts, is genuinely good. The experience of getting it is where things fall apart.
Popeyes occupies an interesting position in the fast food landscape. Its chicken sandwich sparked a national frenzy when it launched in 2019, and the chain still generates real enthusiasm. But from 2025 to 2026, its score on the American Customer Satisfaction Index dropped by 3%, a reflection of the persistent gap between what customers hope to get and what they actually experience on a given visit.

The service problem
Reddit threads about Popeyes have accumulated a specific and consistent set of complaints: excessive wait times, wrong orders, cash-only payment at certain locations, and occasionally running out of chicken entirely. One Redditor went so far as to start documenting every visit, eventually posting that the chain had gotten their order correct three times out of 29.
Part of the structural issue, former employees have explained, is that Popeyes cooks its chicken fresh to order — a practice that genuinely improves the product but creates bottlenecks that other chains don’t face. Customers who order online hoping to skip the wait often find the same problems follow them. One Redditor described being “ignored for a while” before employees prepared their mobile order, with no acknowledgment of the delay. Even delivery drivers have started avoiding Popeyes pickup orders because of long wait times.
The food versus the experience
What keeps Popeyes in the conversation, even for frustrated customers, is the quality of the product when it’s right. “The only reason they are still in business is because the food is top tier in terms of fast food,” one former Popeyes employee wrote on Reddit. That’s a real competitive advantage — and also a real problem if the chain can’t reliably get the food into customers’ hands in a reasonable way. For people who’ve decided the gamble isn’t worth it, there are now more chicken options than ever.
