Breakfast Republic, a San Diego-based breakfast and brunch chain, permanently closed its restaurants in North Park, Ocean Beach, and Encinitas on August 9th. The closures were announced in late July by Rise & Shine Hospitality Group, which owns the restaurant brand.
Three longtime restaurants close
The North Park restaurant at 2730 University Ave. was particularly notable because it was the original Breakfast Republic location when the concept launched in 2015.
The Encinitas restaurant opened in 2016, followed by the Ocean Beach location in 2017. Together, the three restaurants represented some of the chain’s longest-running locations.
Rise & Shine said the closures were connected to expiring leases and what it described as strategic portfolio decisions. Founder Johan Engman said the company is evaluating its restaurant portfolio while focusing on long-term growth.
Chain plans expansion elsewhere
Despite the closures, Rise & Shine is not abandoning the Breakfast Republic brand.
The company plans to open additional Breakfast Republic locations in Palm Springs, Orange County, and Los Angeles. A Palm Springs restaurant is expected to open in October, while locations in Huntington Beach and Highland Park are planned for early 2027.
Breakfast Republic continues to operate restaurants in several other San Diego-area communities, including East Village, Liberty Station, Mission Valley, Pacific Beach, and Scripps Ranch, as well as locations elsewhere in Southern California.
The company is also expanding its separate Breakfast Company concept into Texas, with a Dallas-area location planned for later this year.
For San Diego customers, however, the August closures represent the loss of three familiar brunch destinations, including the restaurant that started the Breakfast Republic story more than 11 years ago.
