California’s Black Bear Diner footprint shrank earlier this year after one of the chain’s longtime locations permanently closed its doors, ending a nearly two-decade run in the community. While the closure marks the loss of a familiar local gathering place, it comes as the California-based restaurant chain continues expanding in other markets across the country.
Davis location closes after 17 years
Black Bear Diner’s Davis restaurant served its final customers on March 29, bringing an end to 17 years in the city. The restaurant, located in downtown Davis, announced the closure on social media, thanking customers for their years of support.
The Davis location first opened in 2009 and became a popular stop for oversized breakfasts, burgers and comfort food. Its closure leaves seven remaining Black Bear Diner restaurants in the greater Sacramento region.
A smaller California footprint
The Davis closure follows other recent California departures for the chain, including the Oakland restaurant, which shut down in late 2023. That location cited ongoing crime concerns in the surrounding area, underscoring the variety of challenges restaurants continue to face, from shifting customer traffic to rising operating costs and public safety issues.
Despite those closures, Black Bear Diner still maintains dozens of restaurants throughout California, which remains its largest market. The company’s online location directory now lists the Davis restaurant as permanently closed.
Growth continues elsewhere
Although some California restaurants have disappeared from the map, Black Bear Diner is not in financial distress. The Redding-based chain has continued opening new locations and has said it sees room for hundreds more restaurants nationwide as it pursues long-term expansion. Company leaders have emphasized franchise growth across multiple states, with additional restaurants planned or under development.
The Davis closure serves as a reminder that even growing restaurant brands occasionally close underperforming or changing locations as they reshape their portfolios to support future expansion.
