Another longtime neighborhood favorite has served its last meal, adding to a growing list of independent restaurants shutting their doors across Florida. The closure marks the end of a 15-year run for a restaurant that helped put one of Miami’s most popular dining districts on the culinary map.
A Coconut Grove favorite says goodbye
Lokal, the beloved burger and craft beer restaurant in Coconut Grove, officially closed on June 28 after 15 years in business. The restaurant was known for its locally sourced ingredients, Florida grass-fed beef burgers and extensive craft beer selection, earning a loyal following among residents and visitors alike.
Owner Matt Kuscher first announced the closure in March, explaining that steep rent increases had made it impossible for the restaurant to remain financially viable. According to Kuscher, the property’s rent had climbed by roughly 50%, making it unsustainable to continue operating despite the restaurant’s popularity.
End of an era
Lokal first opened in Coconut Grove in late 2011 and became one of the neighborhood’s signature dining destinations. Beyond its burgers, the restaurant built its reputation around supporting local farmers, breweries and producers while creating a casual gathering place for the community.
The closure reflects broader challenges facing independent restaurants in Florida, where rising rents and operating costs have forced many longtime businesses to reevaluate their future. Coconut Grove, in particular, has experienced significant redevelopment in recent years, changing the economics for many locally owned establishments.
Although Lokal has closed its original location, Kuscher said the decision will allow Kush Hospitality Group to focus on other projects, including the reopening of Kush Wynwood. Even so, many loyal customers say the loss of Lokal represents more than the closure of a restaurant—it marks the end of a neighborhood institution that helped define Coconut Grove’s dining scene for more than a decade.
