A franchisee of one of America’s best-known buffet chains is back in bankruptcy court less than two years after its first restructuring attempt failed. Despite the filing, the restaurant plans to keep serving customers while it works through its financial troubles.
Conroe Corral Murphy LLC, which operates a single Golden Corral restaurant in Conroe, Texas, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas on June 10. The company reported assets between $100,000 and $500,000 and liabilities ranging from $1 million to $10 million.
Second bankruptcy filing in 16 months
The latest filing marks the second time the franchisee has sought Chapter 11 protection. Conroe Corral Murphy previously filed for bankruptcy in February 2025, but that case was dismissed in February 2026 before a restructuring plan was completed. Court records do not explain why the earlier case was dismissed or what prompted the company to file again just months later.
Unlike a liquidation, Chapter 11 allows businesses to continue operating while reorganizing their debts under court supervision. According to court filings, the Conroe restaurant intends to remain open throughout the bankruptcy process.
Golden Corral brand remains unaffected
The bankruptcy applies only to the independently owned franchisee, not to Golden Corral itself. The buffet chain continues to operate hundreds of locations across the U.S. through a franchise model and has continued investing in new technology and smaller restaurant formats aimed at improving efficiency and expanding its reach.
The filing comes as restaurant operators nationwide continue grappling with elevated labor, food and operating costs, even as inflation has moderated. Franchisees, particularly those operating single locations, often have fewer resources to absorb rising expenses than larger multi-unit operators.
For now, customers visiting the Conroe Golden Corral should not see immediate changes, as the restaurant remains open while the bankruptcy case moves through the courts.
