Popular restaurant chain’s Virginia location avoids permanent closure—but a major change is coming

When a restaurant chain announces widespread closures, customers often assume their local location is next.

That wasn’t the case for one Virginia Beach restaurant, which has been spared from permanent closure—but not from a major transformation.

One location gets a second chance

Earlier this year, Darden Restaurants announced it had completed a review of its Bahama Breeze business, resulting in the permanent closure of several restaurants across the country. Among the changes, the company’s Woodbridge, Virginia, location permanently closed in April.

The Virginia Beach restaurant, however, received a different outcome.

Instead of shutting its doors for good, the Bahama Breeze at 4554 Virginia Beach Blvd. will be converted into another Darden-owned restaurant concept. While the company has not revealed which brand will replace it, the decision means the property will remain an operating restaurant rather than becoming another vacant commercial space.

A new chapter for the property

Darden said it plans to complete the conversion over the next 12 to 18 months. During that time, the Virginia Beach location is expected to continue serving guests until construction and rebranding begin.

The company has not announced whether the replacement will be one of its existing concepts, which include Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Yard House, The Capital Grille, Eddie V’s, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Seasons 52, or another brand in its portfolio.

A permanent end for Bahama Breeze

For longtime Bahama Breeze fans, the change still marks the end of an era. The Caribbean-inspired restaurant has built a loyal following with its tropical atmosphere, island-inspired menu, and frozen cocktails.

Still, compared with permanent closure, the conversion offers a brighter outlook for employees, customers, and the surrounding community. Rather than losing another restaurant altogether, Virginia Beach will gain a new dining concept while keeping the location active—a rare bit of good news during a year that has seen numerous restaurant closures across the country.
