Shipley Donuts is planning 15 new shops in Michigan, giving Metro Detroit another bakery chain to try alongside the options in our roundup of Krispy Kreme alternatives. The Houston-born company plans to spread its first Michigan locations across Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties, with the first shop targeted for early 2027.
Shipley reiterated the 15-store Michigan expansion in an October 22 announcement about its broader push into the Midwest. The Michigan franchise agreement was signed in July and announced in August, with a five-year development plan. The company has not yet named the address or community for its first shop.

Where are the 15 Michigan shops planned?
The territory covers three counties that make up much of the Detroit metropolitan area. Wayne County includes Detroit itself; Oakland County stretches across suburbs to the north, while Macomb County covers communities farther northeast.
That is the confirmed geographic footprint, but there is no official list of 15 cities or street addresses yet. Specific shopping centers, construction starts and opening dates will be announced as the franchisee works through individual sites.
The first restaurant is targeted for late in the first quarter of 2027. The broader plan calls for 15 shops over five years, so the rollout will be gradual rather than a wave of simultaneous grand openings.
Who is bringing Shipley Donuts to Detroit?
Hole Lotta Dough LLC, an Auburn Hills-based franchise group, is Shipley’s first Michigan development partner. Members of the leadership team grew up in Houston and already know the donut chain from its home market.
The group also brings more than 20 years of experience in the Metro Detroit gas station and convenience store business. That local background is part of what attracted Shipley to the partnership, according to the company’s earlier announcement.
Although the deal covers 15 shops, these are planned franchise-operated locations. Michigan has not suddenly gained 15 open Shipley restaurants, and the company has not reported that construction is underway at all 15 sites.
What will be on the menu?
Shipley is known for donuts made fresh each day, including its signature glazed donut with a distinctive six-sided shape. The chain says bakers start preparing donuts and kolaches as early as 3 a.m., and it promotes serving warm glazed donuts until 10 a.m.
Michigan customers will also get a taste of the chain’s Texas-style kolaches. These baked, dough-wrapped breakfast items come with savory fillings such as sausage, egg, bacon, cheese or jalapeรฑo. Coffee choices include regular drip coffee and espresso drinks, including a glazed-donut-flavored latte.
Why Shipley is expanding into Michigan now
Founded in Houston in 1936, Shipley celebrated its 90th birthday this year. The chain says it now has more than 390 company-owned and franchised restaurants across 13 states. Its October update also covered a three-location agreement in Indianapolis and other new development commitments across the South.
Michigan is part of a broader effort to take a longtime Texas favorite into new markets. The announcement is a sizable commitment for Metro Detroit, but the next meaningful milestones will be a confirmed first address, construction progress and a firm opening date.
For now, donut fans in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties can circle 2027 as the targeted starting point for Shipley’s Michigan debut, with more shops planned to follow over the next several years.
