Intro

If you love beer, well, just know that you’re not alone.
In fact, the average American drinks more than 26 gallons of beer every year.
(And in some states, well, the average is quite a bit higher!)
So we love beer – but which beer do we love most?
Well…

Intro (continued)

Fortunately our friends over at YouGov have been crunching numbers based on polling from Q4 2024 (the most recent quarter available).
The results were…interesting, to say the least.
I for one was expecting Bud Lite, Corona, Miller, or even Modelo to be #1 – especially given that Modelo is the most purchased beer in the USA.
But no – they aren’t #1. I was honestly surprised at who was.
So here’s the top ten list – are any of your favorites there?
Starting with an old standby…

#10: Corona Light

Proportion of Americans who know it: 94%
Proportion of Americans who like it: 48%
My take: I’m honestly surprised that Corona Light didn’t rank higher. It’s just such a good beach beer (with lime), and it’s so overwhelmingly popular.
(And honestly…I think it’s my favorite light beer. So there’s that, too.)

#9: Stella Artois

Proportion of Americans who know it: 82%
Proportion of Americans who like it: 48%
My take: Stella Artois is probably the “snootiest” beer on this list, and with good reason. It’s a beautiful golden lager with strong hints of malt and a subtle sweetness to it encapsulated in that slightly herbal taste you get at the end of a sip. Plus, the high level of carbonation means it’s just naturally extra refreshing. A great beer any time!

#8: Blue Moon

Proportion of Americans who know it: 85%
Proportion of Americans who like it: 49%
My take: I love a crisp Belgian wheat ale, and I just have to say – Blue Moon may be a macro brew, but it really hits the spot when you’re looking for something refreshing paired with citrus. (If you’re drinking Blue Moon without a slice of orange, you’re doing it wrong.) The natural pepperiness that you taste is just the latest reminder of how great it is to be alive today and every day.

#7: Modelo

Proportion of Americans who know it: 88%
Proportion of Americans who like it: 49%
My take: For being America’s best-selling beer, you sure think more people would like Modelo.
But let’s face it: This is a popularity contest in the truest sense.
Put differently, you can like lots of other beers, and still like Modelo just that little bit better such that you reach for it first when the time comes to put cash on the table.
I think that’s what’s happening here, plan and simple.

#6: Budweiser

Proportion of Americans who know it: 97%
Proportion of Americans who like it: 50%
My take: You knew it had to be on this list somewhere! Budweiser has had its fair share of missteps over the years, but it’s still one of the most recognized and enjoyed brands in America today, even after its recent fall from grace.
(Of course, the real question is how many people hear “Budweiser” and immediately translate that to “Bud Lite” instead.)

#5: Sam Adams

Proportion of Americans who know it: 86%
Proportion of Americans who like it: 50%
My take: Sam Adams has had an incredible run, especially for a brewer that’s grown so big from a small craft brewery. The Boston Lager is absolutely one of the most popular beers in America, and honestly a lot of their other brews provide good alternatives for people looking for something a little different…but still made with incredible high standards for quality and an attention to detail. Their cherry wheat is a longtime personal favorite!

#4: Miller

Proportion of Americans who know it: 94%
Proportion of Americans who like it: 52%
My take: Miller is just one of those beers that everyone knows and just about everyone likes. Whether it’s Miller Lite, Miller High Life (the champagne of beers – remember that?), or just regular old Miller Genuine Draft – it’s a brand that’s instantly recognizable and delivers a consistent, drinkable taste every time.

#3: Corona

Proportion of Americans who know it: 96%
Proportion of Americans who like it: 52%
My take: I’m probably more of a Corona Lite guy myself, but it’s hard to argue with a good Corona on the beach, with a lime, on a hot day.
That’s pretty much bliss, right?

#2: Guinness

Proportion of Americans who know it: 92%
Proportion of Americans who like it: 54%
My take: I really want to meet the 8% of Americans who don’t know Guinness. It’s a huge cultural entity in the US!
And with good reason. Guinness is certainly the most popular of the stouts – that class of beer with a thicker, chewy, creamy texture that doesn’t win for “drinkability” – but does on taste.
I’m a huge fan.

#1: Heineken

Proportion of Americans who know it: 93%
Proportion of Americans who like it: 55%
My take: I’m shocked that Heineken tops this list. I mean, it’s not the best-selling beer in America (or even top three), and I can tell you from my bartending days that it wasn’t among the ten most-ordered beers where I worked either.
But keep in mind – this isn’t about which beer people will reach for first…it’s about which beer the most people like.
And it’s certainly hard to argue with Heineken – it’s crisp, it’s refreshing, and it’s consistent.
