Oklahoma lost three restaurants that represented very different kinds of comfort: a Tulsa institution, a trailblazing vegan kitchen and a neighborhood-minded wood-fired restaurant. Their departures follow another round of Oklahoma restaurant closures, but none of these farewells feels interchangeable.
Together, the restaurants served their communities for more than six decades. They gave diners familiar tables, distinctive food and the kind of gathering places that become stitched into a cityโs memory.

Peppers Grill in Tulsa
Peppers Grill served its last plates at the end of August, closing a 48-year run that began in 1978. The Utica Square fixture described its food as American dining with a hint of Mexican flavor, a broad approach that welcomed generations of Tulsa families.
The menu ranged from fajitas, enchiladas and chile rellenos to chicken-fried steak, salads and hand-breaded catfish. Homemade food, friendly service and a comfortable patio helped Peppers endure for nearly half a century. Its farewell drew such a crowd that the restaurant ran out of food before closing for the final time.
The Loaded Bowl in Oklahoma City
The Loaded Bowl permanently closed in June after 13 years of serving Oklahoma City. The business began as a vegan food truck in 2013 before moving into a Farmers Market District restaurant in 2016, proving that plant-based cooking could be every bit as hearty and nostalgic as traditional comfort food.
Cashew macaroni and cheese became a staple, whether served with barbecue-style plant-based chicken and broccoli or turned into a spicy Buffalo Mac Bowl. Diners also found sandwiches, nachos and rice bowls. Beyond the food, the restaurant became an inclusive gathering place for Oklahoma Cityโs vegan and LGBTQ+ communities. The ownersโ final project is a cookbook built around their signature recipes.
Raven in Oklahoma City
Raven ended its 2ยฝ-year run on September 5. Chef-owner Timothy Abell opened the restaurant in 2024 inside the former VZDโs space on North Western Avenue, preserving a familiar neighborhood address while giving it a new wood-fired identity.
The seasonal menu included dishes such as wood-grilled filet mignon, coconut curry shrimp and oxtail macaroni and cheese made with Della Terra pasta. Weekend brunch, wine dinners and chef tastings gave regulars more reasons to return. Ravenโs goodbye invitation centered on sharing one last meal and the memories that made the restaurant feel like home.
Peppers Grill, The Loaded Bowl and Raven appealed to different diners, but each created something bigger than a menu. Oklahoma now has three fewer rooms where people knew what they loved and felt welcome ordering it again.
