New Mexico still does not have a confirmed Buc-ee’s, even as the Texas travel-center chain pushes farther west. Drivers tired of waiting can already find several alternatives among these seven gas stations that offer a Buc-ee’s-like experience, including Maverik locations throughout New Mexico.
Recent social-media posts have claimed that Buc-ee’s is preparing to enter the Land of Enchantment. Some have included photos or vague references to plans featuring more than 100 fuel pumps, but none has been accompanied by a verified address, land transaction, development application or company announcement.
New Mexico is not on the confirmed expansion list
The strongest evidence against an imminent opening is Buc-ee’s current development pipeline.
The chain has disclosed roughly 15 locations expected to open through 2031. Those projects include new stores in Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Kansas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Ohio, Nebraska and additional Texas locations. New Mexico is not included.
Buc-ee’s official store directory also shows no New Mexico location. Its western expansion has now reached Goodyear, Arizona, where the chain’s first Arizona store opened on June 22, 2026. An Amarillo, Texas, store sits along Interstate 40 east of the New Mexico line.
That Amarillo store probably helps explain why New Mexico rumors refuse to disappear. Buc-ee’s has already established itself on the same interstate that crosses Tucumcari, Santa Rosa, Albuquerque and Gallup.
Where could a New Mexico Buc-ee’s go?
Albuquerque would be the most obvious candidate because Interstate 40 and Interstate 25 meet there. A location near Tucumcari could capture I-40 traffic entering from Texas, while Las Cruces offers access to Interstate 10 and Interstate 25.
Those are logical possibilities, not active proposals.
Buc-ee’s projects generally leave a substantial public trail before construction begins. The chain needs enough land for a store that can approach 75,000 square feet, an enormous fueling area and hundreds of parking spaces. Rezoning hearings, transportation studies and major land transactions usually become public long before opening day.
None of those signals has surfaced for a New Mexico project.
Could the rumor eventually become true?
New Mexico’s chances look better than they did several years ago.
The Goodyear opening demonstrated that Buc-ee’s is willing to move farther into the Southwest, and the Amarillo store extended the brand along the eastern approach to New Mexico. The state also has several heavily traveled interstate corridors and a steady stream of road-trip tourism.
Still, “eventually possible” is very different from “coming soon.”
For now, the latest New Mexico Buc-ee’s rumors remain unsupported. Until a specific property, development filing or official announcement emerges, Beaver Nuggets in New Mexico are still more wishful thinking than construction plan.
