Wyoming does not have a Buc-ee’s, but some residents live surprisingly close to one. The chain’s Colorado store has already made Interstate 25 one of the major highways where travelers can find a Buc-ee’s, placing the famous beaver within a relatively short drive of Cheyenne.
That nearby store has helped keep speculation about a Wyoming expansion alive.
The closest Buc-ee’s is just south of Wyoming
Buc-ee’s opened its Johnstown travel center along Interstate 25 in Colorado on March 18, 2024. The store is located at 5201 Nugget Road in Johnstown, at the southwest corner of I-25 and Colorado Highway 60, and sits roughly 55 miles south of Cheyenne.
For people in southeastern Wyoming, the Colorado store is close enough for a dedicated day trip or a stop while traveling toward Denver.
Its proximity can also create confusion. Social-media posts and maps occasionally describe potential Buc-ee’s sites in Wyoming, but those posts have not been supported by company announcements or local development documents.
Wyoming is absent from the expansion pipeline
Buc-ee’s has disclosed roughly 15 stores expected to open through 2031. Wyoming is not among the states receiving one.
The chain’s official location directory lists its Colorado store but no Wyoming location. There is also no announced opening date, construction site or hiring campaign for Cheyenne, Casper, Rock Springs or another Wyoming community.
What about the second Colorado proposal?
Buc-ee’s has pursued another Colorado travel center along Interstate 25 in northern El Paso County, near County Line Road just south of the Douglas County border.
The project has hit a zoning snag. In late June 2026, El Paso County’s Planning and Community Development Director was unable to determine whether a Buc-ee’s would qualify as a “convenience store” under the property’s current C-1 zoning district. Buc-ee’s filed a formal appeal on July 7, 2026, and the county’s Board of Commissioners will hold a public meeting to decide the classification question. The board’s decision will only address zoning use—not whether the actual development can proceed.
However, that site is south of the existing Johnstown store and considerably farther from Wyoming. It should not be mistaken for evidence that Buc-ee’s is advancing toward Cheyenne.
Cheyenne makes the strongest hypothetical case
Cheyenne would be the most logical Wyoming candidate because Interstate 25 and Interstate 80 meet there.
The city receives east-west traffic traveling between Nebraska, Utah and points beyond, while Interstate 25 connects Colorado with central Wyoming. A Buc-ee’s near the interchange could potentially draw customers from both highways.
Rock Springs and Casper also sit on important travel routes, but their smaller surrounding populations could make the enormous Buc-ee’s model more difficult to support.
Those possibilities remain speculation. Buc-ee’s has not publicly identified Wyoming as a future market.
For now, the latest rumor update is disappointing but clear: Wyoming is close to a Buc-ee’s, but it is not getting one of its own—at least not according to any confirmed plan.
